POWRi Midget SPEEDWEEK Coming To Macon Speedway Saturday

(Macon, IL) It’s been a long wait but the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League is set to return to Macon Speedway for the first time in 2020 this coming Saturday, August 1. The series was originally scheduled for an event in May in addition to SPEEDWEEK in June, however COVID-19 postponed those two events. The rescheduled SPEEDWEEK starts with action this Friday in Jacksonville, then to Macon Saturday, and wraps up at Lincoln Speedway on Sunday.

The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets have run eleven events so far this season with New Berlin, IL’s Jake Neuman leading the standings. Neuman has yet to win but has six top five finishes. Bixby, OK’s Cannon McIntosh is second in points with two wins, while Ace McCarthy, Michael Kofoid, and Zach Daum complete the top five. Daum has already picked up a win at Macon this season with the MOWA Sprint Cars. The top ten in POWRi standings is represented by six different states, IL, OK, CA, IN, NE, and MO.

The POWRi Engler Machine and Tool 600cc Outlaw Micro League will be running all three nights of SPEEDWEEK, as well. The series has had just six events so far this season, with Tulsa, OK’s Harley Hollan on top of the standings with one win. Joe B. Miller, a veteran open wheeler, is second in points with three wins in six starts. Chase Porter, Bryant Wiedeman, and Scotty Milan complete the top five. While this will be the first POWRi Micro race of the year, the track runs its own compatible Micros on a regular basis.

Headlining the Macon Speedway regular classes joining the open wheelers will be the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds. Last week, 25 Modifieds filled the pits and the race was outstanding with the eventual winner, Ray Bollinger, coming from the seventh spot. Springfield, IL’s Guy Taylor and Pocahontas, IL’s Billy Knebel are tied for the point lead in the class. Taylor has claimed a feature win, while both drivers have finished in the top five in all four starts. Knebel has been running his Pro Mod car in the Modified class, racing full time in both divisions.

The Archers Alley Street Stocks were also invited back this week after having a great turnout last weekend with 21 cars. Blue Mound, IL’s Bobby Beiler is the point leader by 50 over Guy Taylor. Beiler has won three features this season and had a dominant car last Saturday. Taylor is followed in points by Darrell Dick, Jaret Duff, and Rudy Zaragoza. Last Saturday’s battle from 2nd through 6th was a thriller.

Rounding out Saturday’s program will be the DIRTcar Hornets. Decatur, IL’s Brady Reed is on top of the points with a meager six point advantage and two feature wins. Brownstown, IL’s Billy Mason is second, while Bill Basso, Casey Eskew, and Cook Crawford are in the top five.

Pit gates open Saturday at 3:00, grandstands at 5:00, local division pill draw ends at 5:50, hotlaps are at 6:00, and racing is at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $18, while kids 11 and under are free.

Knebel Sweeps Double Features at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) On a night where the racing was intense, the tempers were flaring and the summer heat was getting to everybody, Pro Modifieds driver Billy Knebel took not one but two checkered flags. As a result of a rainout two weeks earlier during the feature events, the Pro Modifieds division was given a make-up feature Saturday night and Knebel, who started on the pole position, and ran alongside Nick Justice for the lead. As Knebel pulled ahead on the back stretch of lap three, he looked as though nothing would slow him down until a spinout on the tenth lap with a lapped car would bump into his car and cause some damage. However, the damage wasn’t severe enough to hinder him from finishing the race and he took to the checkered flag. Justice, who ran second in the feature, would slam the back stretch wall and pull up at the top of the third turn and end his feature.

As a result of the heat race finishes, Justice would start on the pole and Knebel right behind him in the second row. The race would get slowed by cautions in the closing laps as Justice was holding on to the lead with the bottom side groove. As the white flag was flying, Knebel got just inside enough of Justice to take the lead away onto the back stretch and take to the win. Justice would race hard to the finish with Kyle Helmick as Helmick got hooked to the rear left tire as both finished the race tangled together.

The Pro Late Models would also complete a make-up feature from two weeks ago as Jose Parga and Aaron Heck would battle neck and neck and pass back and forth for the 20-lap feature. Parga would hold off Heck in the first feature of the night. In the nightly feature, Parga was challenging for the top spots but would have some issues with the drivers in front of him and would cause some collisions and spin outs. Jake Little was in the lead and would hold off the rest of the competitors for the checkered flag. Again, Aaron Heck would be in a position to challenge for the lead but again fell short of the top spot.

In the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, the seventh place starter would make a pass with six laps left to grab hold of his first Macon Speedway feature of the season. Ray Bollinger of Kewanee drove two hours south to test the track and get ready for the Summer Nationals race that is coming August 13th. A solid stacked lineup saw him as well as Jeremy Nichols, Curt and Zach Rhodes, defending class champion Tommy Sheppard, Jr. Rodney Standerfer, Alan Crowder, Guy Taylor and Danny Smith compete for 20 laps.

Curt Rhodes was the fastest car at the outset as he ran the bottom. Jeremy Nichols contended for the lead and took off from the top groove into the lead and looked like he would finish off the race until Bollinger cut underneath two drivers on the bottom and took the second spot away. Following a restart on lap 14, Bollinger passed Nichols and the rest was history.

In the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks, Bobby Beiler got around Jeff Reed, Jr. and ran away from the 17-car field en route to another feature win. His fast Street Stock coasted along the high banks of the dirt oval and netted his third feature win in the five racing weeks at Macon Speedway.

Dennis Vandermeersch made short work of the Sportsman division 15-lapper. After an early start for former track champion Wes O’Dell, Vandermeersch got past him and blasted off like a rocket with the lead. O’Dell would fall victim to a broken car and pull in to the infield shortly thereafter.

The Hornet division finished off the night with Erik Vanapeldoorn winning the feature event. The win was his second of the season after winning the make-up feature from two weeks ago during last week’s program.

The evening was full of excitement and mayhem and racing and was sponsored by CEFCU as the Kids Club was held for the first time in 2020. Six divisions bringing in over 100 racecars were able to bring some enjoyment to the fans of the 75-year-old track. Macon Speedway shifts its attention to next Saturday and the first visit of the season by the POWRi Midgets & Micro Sprints as they race during Illinois Speed Week. Stock car racing classes will also be part of the program. The Illinois Speed Week will wrap up Sunday at Lincoln Speedway with the POWRi divisions.

Full Racing Show Plus Two Makeup Feature Saturday At Macon Speedway

(Macon, IL) Fans at Macon Speedway are ready for another night of great racing entertainment this coming Saturday, July 25. Six divisions of action are set to race in addition to makeup features for Pro Lates and Pro Mods.

The DIRTcar Pro Late Model class is one division set for two feature events. In addition to their full regular show, the Pro Lates will also be running their feature from July 11, which was postponed when rain hit. The lineup is already set for the make-up feature with Jose Parga and Chuck Mitchell slated on the first row. Coming into the night, teammates, Parga and Dakota Ewing, are tied for the point lead and just 14 points ahead of Jake Little.

The other class running two features is the DIRTcar Pro Mods. For the July 11 makeup, Billy Knebel and Nick Justice are set to start up front in the 14-car field. When it comes to the season standings, Smithton, IL’s Kyle Helmick is on top, while Dalton Ewing, who won his first feature at Macon last week, is only 16 points behind. Knebel, Kevin Crowder, and Brian Burns complete the top five.

The BillingsleyRewards.com Modified division is actually led in points by the Pro Mod of Billy Knebel. The Pocahontas, IL driver is up by two points on Macon Speedway veteran racer, Guy Taylor of Springfield. Taylor is coming off a feature win the last time the class raced. Helmick, Tommy Sheppard, Jr., and Jeff Graham complete the top five.

Dennis Vander Meersch leads the points in the Sportsman class after claiming the first two features of the season. Last year’s champion, Scott Landers, sits second in points, while Rick Roedel, Matt Reed, and Phil Moreland round out the top five. The division is coming off the topless 40, which saw 16 cars in the pits.

Blue Mound, IL driver Bobby Beiler leads the Archers Alley Street Stock standings by 32 over Jaret Duff. Guy Taylor is third, while Rudy Zaragoza and Darrell Dick round out the top five. The Street Stock fields have been outstanding throughout the early weeks of the season.

Starting to look like a three man race in the DIRTcar Hornet class as Brady Reed, Billy Mason, and Bill Basso are all within six points at the top of the standings. Reed has been fastest of the three, winning last week’s night cap after Erik Vanapeldoorn won the makeup feature.

This Saturday night’s event is presented by CEFCU as kids 11 and under will be signing up for kids club and will receive free t-shirts while supplies last.

Pit gates will open at 3:00, grandstands at 5:00, pill draw for competitors will end at 5:50, hotlaps begin at 6:00, and racing will take the green at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $15, while kids 11 and under are free.

ILLINOIS MIDGET SPEED WEEKEND COMING NEXT WEEK

Belleville, IL. (07/19/2020) Quickly transforming into a marquee event on the POWRi calendar, the SPEED WEEKEND is looking promising. A thrilling three-race swing throughout the state of Illinois, the 2020 SPEED WEEKEND is only one week away from action with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League and the POWRi Engler Machine & Tool Micro Sprint League. From Jacksonville Speedway to Lincoln Speedway, the teams will be tested across three nights at three unique tracks as they travel through the state of Illinois.

It all begins on Friday, July 31 at Jacksonville Speedway. The ¼ mile dirt track is located on the Morgan County Fairgrounds in Jacksonville, IL. This will be the first time that any POWRi series has visited the historic ¼ mile track in the 2020 race season.

On Saturday, August 1, both POWRi series visit the “Mighty Macon” Speedway. Which is stated to be the “World’s fastest 1/5-mile dirt track.” The last time POWRi Midgets attended the unique grounds on September 14, 2019 Logan Seavey came out on top. The 2019 event also marked Chad Elliot as a winner for the POWRi Engler Machine & Tool Micro Sprint League.

The final night on Sunday, August 2 when the SPEED WEEKEND concludes at Lincoln Speedway. The tight ¼ mile semi banked dirt oval has established many winners. The most recent winner being Tyler Courtney, on August 16, 2019. The last time the POWRi Engler Machine & Tool Micros visited the historic Lincoln, IL speedway was in 2017. Both races in 2018 and 2019 resulted in a rain out. The driver that topped the charts in 2017 was Nick Howard.

Daum Takes MOWA Feature at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Zach Daum raced away from the 22-car field and scored the second Midwest Open Wheel Association feature win of the 2020 campaign. The MOWA season opener was the previous night at Lincoln Speedway where a 30-car field saw Rico Abreu take the first checkered flag of the year. Abreu did not make the trip to Macon Speedway and that gave the opportunity for 23 other drivers to earn a win. Daum, who has raced POWRi Midgets and MOWA Sprints at Macon in the past, was familar with the track and it showed as he weaved his way through the lapped traffic and dominated the field. 2019 MOWA feature winner at Macon Speedway Terry Babb finished third as Kameron Key was able to finish in the runner-up position.

After the Built Ford Tough MOWA Sprint Cars finished their feature, the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks took to the track and Nick Macklin was in a fight with Terry Reed, Bobby Beiler and Darrell Dick for the win. Dick would take the lead with a run on the top but was caught with lapped traffic and suffered a hit and a flat tire which took him off the track to get a tire change. He would return but would start from the back. Macklin resumed the lead and had Beiler and Reed breathing down his neck for the remainder of the race.  Beiler came close to taking the lead from him but couldn’t make up the difference with the laps remaining and would take second place.

Dalton Ewing has watched his twin brother Dakota Ewing take checkered flag after checkered flag year after year and after finally getting behind the wheel of his Pro Modified, Dalton had shown his ability behind the wheel. Saturday night, Dalton seized an opportunity from the fifth starting position to the lead all thanks to the top groove and he got locked in. Passing Kevin Crowder and Nick Justice for the lead, Dalton Ewing got through the variety of caution flags and would find victory lane with his first Macon Speedway feature win and second career feature. Crowder would take a top five finish while Billy Knebel, who had a rough heat race finish, would start dead last of the 15-car field and take home third place on the night.

Jose Parga and Dakota Ewing battled for the checkered flag in the Pro Late Model division. After Jake Little smacked into the concrete on the backstretch and was helped off the track with a tow truck, the race was down to the two teammates and friends and with solid and clean turns and straightaways, Parga carried his car to the finish line before Ewing.

Trevin Littleton always finds a way to succeed when he visits Macon Speedway and Saturday was no different when he arrived with his family to compete in the Micro Sprints division Presented by Bailey Chassis. The race to win was over early as Littleton pulled away to make the closest race between Molly Day and Daryn Stark in the battle for second. Day would use the bottom of the track to pass Stark and take the runner-up spot.

The Hornets were bonused a feature Saturday night because of last week’s rainout during the feature program. The Hornets were also bonused $100 to each feature winner from former Hornet driver Vernon Carlow. Erik Vanappeldoorn was the first winner of the bonus cash as he claimed the make-up Hornet feature. The second feature would be won by Brady Reed, who had to fend off Mike Eskew and a bunch of lapped traffic to take the checkered flag, a familar sight for the Reed Racecars clan.

The evening started with a tribute by Art Fehrman and Terry Young from the Illinois Stock Car Hall of Fame as they honored Butch Garner, long time racer and driver at Macon Speedway. The driver is most talked about with his win in the inaugural Herald & Review 100 event in 1981 and his battles with some of the fiercest drivers in central Illinois from Dick Taylor to Jim Leka, among others. The crowd gave Garner a terrific ovation before the evening’s racing program.

Another solid night of racing brought in over 100 racecars again to the grounds of Macon Speedway on a night sponsored by Ripple’s Auto Body on Route 121 in Mt. Zion. Macon Speedway thanks Ripple’s Auto Body for their sponsorship of the night’s event.

Next Saturday Night will feature the make-up of the other two divisions’ features that were washed away by rain on July 11th. The Pro Modifieds and Pro Late Models will run double features. There will also be action from the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Hornets. Spectator gates open at 5pm with hot laps at 6pm, qualifying at 6:30pm and racing by 7pm.

Vandermeersch scores Topless 40 Feature

Vandermeersch scores Topless 40 Feature

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Retired Springfield firefighter Dennis Vandermeersch was locked into the 1/5th mile dirt oval at Macon Speedway and managed to run away with the Sportsman Topless 40 feature event. The annual event with the Sportsman division racing without their roofs brought out the best in Vandermeersch in the feature but not the best in the heat race where he finished deep in the field and spun out during the race. From the 13th starting spot, Vandermeersch soared to the front and by lap 6, passed Rick Roedel for the lead and took off for the checkered flag. A caution flag on lap 29 possibly kept Vandermeersch from actually lapping the field. He made the pass on the fourth place car and was closing in on the third place driver before the yellow flag came out and brought the action back to a single file restart. The event was finished with six caution flags and completed in 19 minutes and 56 seconds.

Bobby Beiler took the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks main event. Beiler lost the win last week on a last lap pass by Terry Reed and had to fight off Reed as well as Nick Macklin. Beiler ran the top groove of the track and avoided the pass by Macklin from the bottom. Along with the glory of the checkered flag, Beiler also received a $100 bonus from Rocco’s Bar in Decatur.

Guy Taylor flew around the top of the track in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds. Running second row behind Curt and Zach Rhodes, Taylor was fast on the gas and passed Curt Rhodes to get to the lead and ran around the cushion of the track to finish off the race. Pro Modified racer Billy Knebel ran the bottom of the track and secured second place ahead of Curt Rhodes and defending champion Tommy Sheppard, Jr. took fourth.

With the night sky lighting up from a strong thunderstorm to the north and rain sprinkling, the Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chasis finished a 15-lap feature quickly as Mt. Zion’s Tony Clifton would take the checkered flag and win the race.

As the Pro Late Models took to the track, the rains got heavier and the event finished due to rain without getting to run three features. Those features will be made up at a time TBA. The night featured over 100 racecars among the seven racing classes and firefighters and first responders were admitted free with their IDs.

Macon Speedway welcomes the MOWA 410 Winged Sprint cars to the track next Saturday night for a full stock car racing program. Pro Late Models, Pro Modifieds, Archer’s Alley Street Stocks, Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis and Hornets will make up the show.

Sportsman Topless 40 Highlights Macon Speedway Saturday Racing

Firemen and First Responders To Receive Free Admission

(Macon, IL) The Sportsman drivers get their chance to shine this coming Saturday, July 11 at Macon Speedway, as the Topless 40 is on the docket. Each season, the Topless 40 is the top special for the class, with drivers removing the top of their cars, giving fans a great look into the cockpit. Six other divisions will also be in action.

The Sportsman have had just one event at the track this season, on opening night. It looked to be a carry over from a year ago, as Dennis Vander Meersch took the top spot with Scott Landers in tow. The two finished first and second in a lot of races in 2019 with Landers going on to the championship.

The BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds have two strong nights of racing in the history books and it’s a crate engine car leading the standings. Billy Knebel, of Pocahontas, IL, has been running not only in the Pro Mod class but also the Modified class. After two nights, Knebel is at the top of a list of 37 drivers in the Modified division, despite having less horsepower. The dry slick track has worked nicely for him, with a pair of top five finishes, while Guy Taylor is second in points after a pair of strong finishes. Another Pro Mod racer, Kyle Helmick, Jarrett Stryker, and Tommy Sheppard complete the top five.

Jake Little, of Springfield, IL, and Dakota Ewing, of Warrensburg, IL, are tied at the top of the Macon Speedway Pro Late Model standings. Just two points back is Jose Parga in third. Little and Parga have claimed victories this year, while Ewing has come up just short, after taking last year’s championship. The Pro Lates put on a great show, one week ago. This week’s overall top qualifier will have a $100 bonus on the line, courtesy of R33D Racecars.

The DIRTcar Pro Mods are still trying to get the offseason rust knocked off after two caution plagued races. Smithton, IL driver, Kyle Helmick leads the points by just six over Billy Knebel. Brian Burns is third, while Kevin Crowder and Dalton Ewing round out the top five. Crowder, Knebel, and Ewing all had great runs last week before falling out of the event. For Crowder and Knebel, it was contact while out front, for Ewing, it was mechanical failure while hammering the cushion.

The Archers Alley DIRTcar Street Stocks had another strong field last week and a feature that saw a last lap pass for the win. Veteran driver Terry Reed slipped by Bobby Beiler on the last lap to claim the victory a week ago, keeping Beiler from going 2-for-2 to start the season. Beiler does lead the points over Jaret Duff, Rudy Zaragoza, Darrell Dick, and Guy Taylor. Those who also run the Street Stock race on Friday night at Lincoln will be battling for some extra bonus money.

The DIRTcar Hornet features have been won by a father and son combo this year, Brady Reed and Joe Reed. At the top of the points is Billy Mason, of Brownstown, IL. Mason leads by six points over Bill Basso.

Rounding out Saturday’s slate will be the Micros By Bailey Chassis. Jeremy Camp, of Sullivan, IL, leads the points by two over Tyler Robbins of Collinsville, IL. 19 Micro drivers were on hand opening night, creating for an exciting event.

The night will also be a special one for firemen and first responders. Those who are one in one of the aforementioned lines of work will receive free grandstand admission by showing proper ID proof. Grandstand admission for all others is $15, while kids 11 and under are free.

Pit gates will open at 3:00, grandstands at 5:00, local pill draw will end at 5:50, hotlaps begin at 6:00, and racing will begin at 7:00.

MOWA Sprints To Open Season July 17/18 With Lincoln/Macon Doubleheader

(Jacksonville, IL) The Built Ford Tough MOWA 410 Winged Sprint Cars should be about ½-way through their 2020 campaign right now. However, COVID-19 took over and caused a major delay that is about to end with the 2020 season opening weekend, Friday and Saturday, July 17/18 at two Central Illinois racetracks.

Lincoln Speedway, located at the Logan County Fairgrounds, in Lincoln, IL, will be the site of the season opener on Friday, July 17. The date was actually on the original schedule but will now serve as opening night for the popular series. DIRTcar Pro Late Models, Modifieds, Nutech Seed DII Midgets, and Hornets will also race.

Event #2 of the doubleheader weekend will be held at another Track Enterprises facility, Macon Speedway on Saturday, July 18. The track, located only 50 minutes to the southwest of Lincoln, will make for a great doubleheader for the series. This will replace the MOWA event that was scheduled for Tri-State Speedway on the same date. The Macon Speedway event will also feature a number of its regularly scheduled classes.

During the 2019 season, Rico Abreu claimed the win at Lincoln Speedway, while Terry Babb took the win at Macon Speedway. Over 20 sprints were on hand for both events last year.

Pits will open both days at 3:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps will be at 6:00, and racing will be at 7:00. Grandstand admission for each day will be $18, while kids 11 and under will be free. Tickets and pit passes will be available at the gates on raceday.

Hampton Inn and Comfort Inn in Lincoln, IL are the host hotels for the weekend, with discounted rates for teams and fans. Just mention Lincoln Speedway when reserving your rooms. Hampton Inn can be contacted by calling 217-732-6729, while Comfort Inn’s number is 217-735-5800.

This upcoming July 10/11 weekend, both tracks will be in action with Lincoln Speedway hosting DIRTcar Pro Late Models, Modifieds, Nutech Seed DII Midgets, Street Stocks, and Hornets on Friday, while Macon will have DIRTcar Pro Late Models, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, DIRTcar Pro Mods, Topless Sportsman, Archers Alley Street Stocks, Hornets, and Micros By Bailey Chassis on Saturday.
