Crowder Takes Checkered Flag at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Alan Crowder has been racing and competing at Macon Speedway for a lot of years, mainly in Sportsman and BillingsleyRewards.com Modified divisions. He’s tasted success, failure, wrecks, dirt, all things considered and hasn’t been able to win a feature. He’s had the chances to be fastest qualifier and heat race winner but when it comes to the feature race, he’s only been as high as first runner-up. Until Saturday night. During the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified feature with a caution flag that penalized Tommy Sheppard, Jr. for a spinout that sent him to the back, Crowder had one fewer driver to worry about. Guy Taylor, Curt Rhodes, Jarrett Stryker and Joe Strawkas were moving toward the front and after a handful of caution flags, Crowder opened his lead and took his first feature win in more than ten years.

Braden Johnson looked for a Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model feature win and after bottom side passing to take the lead away from Ryan Miller, Johnson’s car smoked and started to let up. That was the perfect time for Colby Sheppard to charge hard from the top and take the lead away and win as the green flag hit the air for two laps to go.

One of the closest feature finishes of the night came from the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks as Darrell Dick narrowly crossed the finished line ahead of Guy Taylor. Rudy Zaragoza started the 15-lapper with the lead but lost it three laps in to Dick. Dick stayed on the top side and ran the best line he could to make sure he stayed in the lead as he saw Taylor, who ran the bottom, close in for the lead. As the race came to the finish, Dick loosened up on the top but still came through with speed to secure the win.

The other close feature finish was in the final race of the night with the $300-to-win “World Hornet Championship” race as the 4-cylinders ran for 15 laps to the finish. Billy Mason charged ahead of Allan Harris, Shelby Beiler, Eric VanApeldoorn and Michael McKay to have the lead. As the race moved through its laps and lapped traffic began to close in with Mason, McKay made his top side move and would steal the lead and the win away on the last turn of the last lap.

The Pro Modified feature saw Kyle Helmick once again claim victory lane. The race started with Helmick in second place behind Nick Justice. As the race hit the early laps, Justice loosened up when a lapped car was in his lane and after making the pass on the lapped car lost control and spun out. Justice went to the back and Helmick took the lead and that helped him extend his points lead with just a few weeks left on the schedule.

Aarik Andruskevitch was the fastest and quickest of the 12-car Micro Sprint field. The division, presented by Bailey Chassis, was a fast moving feature that worked out well for not only Andruskevitch but also John Barnard. The defending points champion would start ninth and finish third to receive a special $100 bonus as the Hard Charger from Roland Machinery in Springfield.

An added feature division Saturday night was the USAC/IMRA Speed 2 Midgets. Springfield’s Tyler Roth was lightning quick in his heat race, won the dash to start on the pole and cruised to the feature win in the Durbin Strong 25. The family of Matt Durbin, who was seriously injured in a crash about year ago to the day at Macon Speedway, helped sponsor the event. Matt Durbin, who is on the long road to recovery, was in attendance as a spectator.

Macon Speedway thanks Air King for sponsoring the full night of racing and over 110 entries among the 7 racing divisions. The track rests for a week as crews will work with the Du Quoin State Fair Labor Day races next weekend. The racing returns for the final three scheduled race nights in September with 98.1 GRIZ-FM Night and the Vintage Racing of Illinois cars plus a full stock car racing program.

Jack Hewitt Night Canceled Due To Rain

Jack Hewitt Night, featuring the Camfield Memorial for the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League was canceled due to rainfall. Several showers passed throughout the day but it was a 4:00 torrential downfall that lasted over an hour that was the final straw.

Macon Speedway will be back in action on Saturday, August 28 for Air King Night featuring the IMRA Speed2 Midgets and six other classes.

Jack Hewitt Night to Feature POWRi Midgets Saturday at Macon Speedway

(Macon, IL) The biggest racing weekend in Central Illinois is on tap this weekend with MOWA Sprints at Lincoln Speedway Friday night, State Fair Races in Springfield Saturday and Sunday, and the POWRi Midgets at Macon Speedway Saturday night.  The Macon Speedway event will now be known as “Jack Hewitt Night”, set for Saturday, August 21 as the open wheel cars of POWRi make their second appearance of the season.

Hewitt is a two-time champion of the USAC Silver Crown Series as well as a former titlist of the All-Star Circuit of Champions.  In addition, Hewitt was the 1998 winner of the Eldora 4-Crown Nationals, winning features in USAC Sprints, Midgets, and Silver Crown as well as the UMP Modifieds.

Those who did not have the pleasure of watching Hewitt race may know him from the heated video interview that has gone viral on the web.  The interview, laced with some NSFW language, has been viewed over 1,000,000 times on Facebook alone.  It has also led to a line of apparel and souvenirs.  That interview just happened to take place at, you guessed it, Macon Speedway.

The August 21st event at Macon Speedway will feature Hewitt as the grand marshal.  He will be on hand, greeting fans, selling books and apparel, signing autographs, telling stories, and taking in some great Macon Speedway action.

The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League will be competing in the Camfield Memorial while the POWRi Micros will race in the Chevy Hall of Fame Museum 20. The BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, DIRTcar Pro Mods, and Hornets are scheduled to race.

The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League is led by Colby, KS driver, Bryant Wiedeman, who has yet to claim a victory but has a 180-point lead on Brent Crews, from Denver, NC. Crews has collected three wins this season in POWRi action. Last year’s champion, Jake Neuman is third in the standings, while Ryan Timms and Cannon McIntosh complete the top five.

Other point leaders coming into the night include Bradley Fezard from Arkansas, who leads the POWRi Engler Machine & Tool Micro class, Guy Taylor (BillingsleyRewards.com Modified), Kyle Helmick (DIRTcar Pro Mods), and Allan Harris (DIRTcar Hornets).

Pit gates will open Saturday at 3:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps will begin at 6:00, and racing will take the green at 7:00 PM. Grandstand admission is $20, while kids 11 and under are free.

Cheatham Races To Macon Speedway HART Micro Checkers

(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway was back at it this past Saturday, August 14 with a six division program led by the PureMax Racing Oil HART Non-Wing Micros and a strong field of BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds. The night of racing turned out to be a great one with exciting side-by-side battles and clean driving.

20 PureMax Racing Oil HART Non-Wing Micros made their first Macon Speedway appearance after two previous attempts were canceled due to weather and pandemic. A strong field was on hand and the track was conducive to two and three wide racing for the 20-lap feature. Bethalto, IL’s Jake Cheatham took the lead at the get go and never looked back racing to the impressive victory. Tyler Kykendall, Michael Brummitt, J.B. Gilbert, and Hayden Harvey completed the top five.

The show of the night came in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified class. With 24 pitside, 20 drivers locked in to the feature event through the heats and last chance. The race ended up being a good one, with drivers running up top against the cushion, while others were rolling the bottom. Five time 2021 feature winner, Tommy Sheppard took the lead on lap one and was running up top. Meanwhile, Zach Rhodes, Curt Rhodes, Dave Crawley, Jr. and other were racing hard right behind him. Curt Rhodes actually took the lead for a moment during the race’s mid-stage before Sheppard pulled back ahead. For the New Berlin, IL driver, it was his sixth Macon win of the year. Zach Rhodes, Curt Rhodes, Crawley, and Guy Taylor rounded out the top five.

The Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models had a competitive field of cars for their 20-lap feature event. Blaise Baker, making a rare Macon Speedway appearance started on the front row for the race and ran side-by-side with Blake Damery for the lead early on. Baker pulled out front with Braden Johnson following. The duo raced in front of the pack with Colby Sheppard and Damery also involved. A green-white-checkered finish set up a battle as Johnson drove to the lowside for the lead. The two kept it clean coming to the checkered with Baker claiming his first Macon feature victory. Johnson, Colby Sheppard, Damery, and Bob Sidener completed the top five.

Kyle Helmick led the first 13 laps of the DIRTcar Pro Mod feature, running the bottom of the track. On the highside was Springfield, IL’s Guy Taylor, making progress each and every lap. Taylor took over the lead on lap 14 and also led the final lap to claim the exciting victory. Helmick, Nick Justice, Kevin Crowder, and Billy Knebel finished in the top five.

Nick Macklin, of Argenta, IL, put on a dominant performance in the Archers Alley Street Stock division. Macklin took the lead from the start and never looked back, winning by nearly six seconds. Guy Taylor took second, while Jonathon Hall, Zach Taylor, and Dustin Reed completed the top five.

The DIRTcar Hornets saw Allan Harris start on the front row and pull away to another victory, extending his point lead. Billy Mason took second, while Michael McKay, Korey Bailey, and Justin Coffey rounded out the top five.

Macon Speedway will be back in action as part of the Illinois State Fair race weekend. The Jack Hewitt Night will feature the famed driver as Grand Marshal, selling apparel and books, and signing autographs. The Camfield Memorial will be held for the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets, while the POWRi Micros will run in the Chevy Hall of Fame Museum feature event. The BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, DIRTcar Pro Mods, and Hornets will also be in action.

Big Money Brings In Big Races at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) The third annual Diane Bennett Memorial race at Macon Speedway did just what it has for the first two years, added bonus money to the purse prizes of the racing divisions and brought in some exciting racing. 104 entries among six racing divisions on Saturday night paid homage to a woman who spent better than 30 years handscoring races at Macon Speedway and other racing events and facilities.

One of the top races of the night was the special 25-lap, $1,550-to-win BillingsleyRewards.com Modified feature racing. Guy Taylor and Rodney Standerfer, former track champions in the division, were the front row with Tommy Sheppard, Jr., defending champion, and Curt Rhodes, another former champion, starting in the second row. The early stretch of the race was controlled by Sheppard with Taylor and Standerfer keeping close. Going into the third turn on lap nine, Taylor passed Sheppard for the lead and things looked good for Taylor. However, a miscue at the top of the second turn changed things as Sheppard not only regained the lead but Taylor fell into the middle of the race field and eventually four laps later was off the track. Sheppard would go on to return to victory lane and take home the big payday.

The Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model class was also a special 25-lap event with a prize of $1,270-to-win. Jose Parga did go on for the win but it was a fairly close race between him and second place driver Braden Johnson. Parga kept Johnson roughly a car length’s lead for the better part of the race and led all 25 laps. Dakota Ewing, racing in Storm Beiler’s 33B instead of his usual 25, would go for third after starting on the pole.

Jeremy Nichols won from the pole in the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks but it wasn’t a typical blast off for the win kind of race. Darrell Dick, Guy Taylor, Nick Macklin and Terry Reed were keeping it close and made for an fun 15-lap race.

The Pro Modified feature was full of unique settings. The start of the race began with a caution flag. Minutes later as the race restarted and the drivers were coming to the first lap, Billy Justice, Jr. and Chris Erwin got up on the top of the third turn wall and rolled their cars. Justice’s car sparked into a fiery mess and crew members raced to help with fire extinguishers and get Justice out and away from his racecar. All parties would be safe although Justice’s car would be towed back to the pit area. Once the race got moving again, Kyle Helmick would go from being the third row outside starter to being on the front row outside and drive away from Kevin Crowder and Nick Justice. While Helmick was leading and pulling away, the run of the racing was between Crowder and Justice who traded back and forth and side-by-side action until the race came down to two-to-go and Justice fell victim to a broken racecar after colliding with Crowder.

There were no cautions in the 15-lap feature for the Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis. Jeremy Camp took off with the lead from the pole position and all 16 cars kept things moving as the full race was completed in 3 minutes.

The night was completed by the 4-cylinder Hornet class as Eric Vanapeldoorn from Clinton won the 14-car race. Much like his 6-lap heat race, he had to stop Jeremy Reed from taking the lead from him and he was successful both times.

Thousands of donated dollars for the sake of the 104 entries on Saturday night was an amazing accomplishment by Kellie Bennett and her family to honor her mother Diane and create a different event and evening. Instead of arranging money for whoever wins, the idea came to offer money to all positions in all classes. The idea has been a success and many drivers have benefited from the night and been able to keep their racing programs going in the second half of the racing season.

Next Saturday night at Macon Speedway the HART non-wing Micro Sprints will race for the first time this season. Also on the program will be the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Archer’s Alley Street Stocks, Pro Modifieds and Hornets. August continues with the annual POWRi Midgets and Micro Sprints Camfield Memorial Night with special guest Jack Hewitt.

Jack Hewitt Night Set for August 21 at Macon Speedway

(Macon, IL) The biggest racing weekend in Central Illinois is coming up Friday, August 20-Sunday, August 22 with MOWA Sprints at Lincoln Speedway Friday night, State Fair Races in Springfield Saturday and Sunday, and the POWRi Midgets at Macon Speedway Saturday night.  The Macon Speedway event will now be known as “Jack Hewitt Night”, set for Saturday, August 21 as the open wheel cars of POWRi make their second appearance of the season.

Hewitt is a two-time champion of the USAC Silver Crown Series as well as a former titlist of the All Star Circuit of Champions.

The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League will be competing in the Camfield Memorial while the POWRi Micros, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, DIRTcar Pro Mods, and Hornets are scheduled to race.
