Macon Speedway Set For Seven Division Show Saturday Night

(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway officials are preparing for a busy night of action, Saturday, May 1st, with seven divisions racing. Off track, fans will enjoy $1 off a concession favorite, walking tacos, and kids will be treated to CEFCU Kids Club activities.

Jose Parga, of New Berlin, IL, leads the field of Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models into Saturday night’s event. Parga has claimed wins at a number of tracks early this season, including the Macon Speedway opener two weeks ago. Teammate Dakota Ewing is second in points, while Jake Little, Cody Maguire, and Colby Sheppard round out the top five.

Many time Macon Speedway track champion, Tommy Sheppard, Jr., picked up where he left off last season, winning on opening night in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified division. Guy Taylor comes into week #2 second in points, while Alan Crowder, Chad Evans, and Jarrett Stryker finish off the top five.

In the DIRTcar Pro Mods, Fairview Heights, IL driver Ryan Hamilton leads the standings after his $1k win on opening night. The teenage driver is followed by last year’s champion, Billy Knebel, Kyle Helmick, Kevin Crowder, and Nick Justice.

The Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman are back on schedule for this Saturday night as well. Jeremy Nichols, of Lovington, IL, won the Sportsman feature in his Street Stock on April 17 with Dennis Vander Meersch, Scott Landers, Jim Farley, III, and Rick Roedel in the top five.

In addition to his Sportsman point lead, Nichols also leads the Archers Alley Street Stock division standings, as he went two-for-two on opening night. Fellow Street Stock star, Terry Reed, is second in points with Guy Taylor, Darrell Dick, and Nick Macklin completing the top five.

Allan Harris won the DIRTcar Hornet feature on opening night at the track, giving the Chatham, IL driver the point lead coming into week two. Billy Mason, Shelby Beiler, Cook Crawford, and Bill Basso are in the top five.

Making their 2021 debut at the track will be the Micros By Bailey Chassis. In the two test and tune events at the speedway, the Micros had the biggest turnouts with drivers getting ready for the new season. This week’s event will be a great tuneup for the POWRi Midget and Micro special next Saturday night.

Pit gates open Saturday at 4:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps begin at 6:00, and racing will take the green at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $15, while kids 11 and under are free.

Weather Cancels Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Illinois Doubleheader

Next Macon Speedway Event Set For Saturday, May 1

BATAVIA, Ohio (April 22, 2021) – The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Illinois doubleheader originally scheduled Friday, April 23rd at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, and Macon Speedway on Saturday, April 24th has been canceled due to weather.

With heavy rain overnight and the forecast for rain and cold temperatures throughout the weekend, track and series officials have mutually agreed to cancel this weekend’s events. The events will not be made up.

“We’ve been in constant communication with both venues all week continuously evaluating the situation. Unfortunately, the forecast just isn’t in our favor this weekend,” said Series Director Rick Schwallie. “These decisions are never easy, and we hate to cancel any event, but we all feel this is in the best interest of all parties. We look forward to returning to Tri-City Speedway in July and Macon Speedway in 2022.”

Next up, the series will visit Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY on April 30th for the 17th Annual John Bradshaw Memorial and Florence Speedway in Union, KY on May 1st for the 35th Annual Ralph Latham Memorial. The events will pay $12,000 and $15,000 to win, respectively.

Tim McCreadie currently leads the series point standings, carrying the Midwest Sheet Metal orange spoiler. Previous point leader, Hudson O’Neal remains just 40 points out of the lead, followed by Brandon Sheppard, Devin Moran, and Kyle Bronson rounding out the top five.

The next event for Macon Speedway will be on Saturday, May 1 as the second CEFCU Kids Club Night will be held. Seven divisions will be in action, including Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Pro Mods, Archers Alley Street Stocks, Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman, Hornets, and Micros By Bailey Chassis.

Nichols Doubles Opening Night Features at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Jeremy Nichols of Lovington started his 2021 racing season in victory lane in consecutive races. Nichols got the front row outside assignment to begin in the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman division and pulled away for a 15-lap feature win. Nichols, a former champion in the division, had to hold off Scott Landers and Dennis Vandermeersch, also former division champions. After finishing off the Sportsman race, Nichols conducted a brief victory lane interview and then hopped back into the car and from the same starting position led all 15 laps in the Archer’s Alley Street Stock feature event.

Nichols had more to work through in the Street Stock feature. After being winded from the first feature, the Street Stock race featured many cautions and pauses which kept Nichols on the track longer. The race picked up momentum and scored seven consecutive green flag laps and Nichols opened up the lead over former champion Terry Reed. He would go on to lead and win 30 consecutive laps and take the lead in the divisions with the 2021 points standings.

The Pro Modifieds featured a special $1,000-to-win attraction for Opening Night and the race was a special 20-lap event. Following a caution-plagued Street Stock feature, the Pro Modifieds had zero troubles and ran the entire 20-lap event without a caution flag. Fairview Heights native Ryan Hamilton led from wire-to-wire to win the big money. The 18-year-old started racing in the Kid Modz at Macon Speedway and advanced his racing career to a $1,000 payday in the Pro Modifieds.

The 2021 season opened up the same way that the 2020 season ended as the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds took the checkered flag. Defending two-time track champion Tommy Sheppard, Jr. of New Berlin carried the winner’s flag and has won six consecutive features at Macon Speedway dating back to the end of the previous season. Sheppard also won his heat race in a back and forth 8 laps with Guy Taylor. Taylor was closing in on Sheppard in the race’s final laps but ran out of time.

Jose Parga got his 2021 season started off on the right foot with the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model division. A feature win on Opening Night is the best start one can ask for and Parga coasted into the lead and held off Jake Little and race partner Dakota Ewing for the 20-lap event.

The 76th consecutive season opener was capped off with a side-by-side finish in the Hornet division. Allen Harris beat Billy Mason to the finish line in dramatic fashion for his first victory in his short career. Harris came from the back after getting tangled with Mason and spinning him around to get sent to the rear. With few laps remaining, Harris was fast and back to the front to challenge for the lead which he would take coming out to the checkered flag from the fourth turn.

Opening Night is always a special night. Memories and old faces get revisited. The night also featured the return of the Specator Drags–an intermission event which sees fans from the stands drive their own cars on Macon Speedway in a one-lap dash to win. Four drivers tested the high banks to try to win the trophy but it was Eric Nohrem won two races in a 2005 Chrysler 300C but it was the championship round that stood out as the memory-keeper. Racing against a driver named D.C. in a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, Nohrem on the high side was fast enough to win but as they were slowing into the first and second turns the SUV rose off its left wheels and rolled. The driver would be fine but the car would not be so fortunate. Truth be told, you never know what you’ll see when you go to Mighty Macon Speedway.

A six-division night to start off 2021 saw nearly 100 racecars in the pit area with a full crowd on a chilly mid-April evening. Next up for Macon Speedway is a biggie: the Lucas Oil Late Model Series comes to the track for a special $15,000-to-win event. The Billingsleyrewards.com Modifieds will run for $1,000-to-win and the Pro Modifieds will go for $300-to-win as the track closes out the first month of the season.

Macon Speedway’s 76th Season To Begin This Saturday Night

Six Divisions Of Racing Plus CEFCU Kids Club

(Macon, IL) For the 76th time, Macon Speedway, in Macon, IL will be celebrating the start of a new season, this coming Saturday, April 10th.  The fastest 1/5-mile dirt track in the world will have an action-packed evening, featuring six different classes of racecars plus CEFCU Kids Club.

Headlining the event will be the DIRTcar Pro Late Models and BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds.  The two divisions are the fastest classes that compete on a weekly basis and are looked at as the premier divisions at the track.  They feature a good mix of experienced veterans as well as younger drivers trying to steal some limelight.

The DIRTcar Pro Late Models champion from last year Jake Little will be back looking to carry over his momentum from last year to a much-anticipated 2021 season. Following Little was a group of consistent drivers including rookie Brady Lynch, Cody Maguire, Jose Parga, and Blake Damery.

The BillingsleyRewards.com Modified class is coming off a strong season which saw solid car counts all season and Tommy Sheppard, Jr. taking the championship by only 2 points, the difference of one feature position. Other front runners last year included Billy Knebel, Guy Taylor, Curt Rhodes, and Alan Crowder.

One of the staple divisions at the track, the DIRTcar Pro Mods, will be making a return for the 2021 season.  The class is a more economical form of the Modifieds.  While they may look similar, the cars utilize a GM crate engine which makes things a little more economical.  Billy Knebel previous champion from the 2020 season will be making his return to the world’s fastest 1/5-mile dirt track for the season opener on April 10th.

The Archer’s Alley Street Stocks will also be making their return to Macon Speedway for the 2021 season.  The class had a great resurgence with great car counts during the 2020 season and expect more of the same in this 2021 season.  Last year, Blue Mound, IL’s Bobby Beiler claimed the championship.  The division also has a number of specials at the track throughout the year with the Midwest Big Ten Series.

The DIRTcar Hornets are back for another season of economical racing.  The class, starting as a beginner division in the late 90’s, had a good mix of young and older drivers last year.  56 different Hornet drivers were on track in 2020 with Brady Reed, of Decatur, IL, winning the championship.  Reed had an incredibly strong season and took home the crown by 94 points.

Rounding out Saturday night’s program will be the Micros by Bailey Chassis.  The Micros have another strong slate of races coming to Macon Speedway again this year.  Four events this season will be POWRi sanction national events, while the track will also run thirteen unsanctioned events for the class.  A non-wing show for the class is also on schedule.  The Micro class is predominately made up of young kids trying to garner experience, but a number of veterans fill out the field of cars.

Kids 11 and under, who arrive at the track by 7:00, will also receive this year’s edition of the CEFCU Kid’s Club T-Shirt. CEFCU has been a long time sponsor of the Macon Speedway kids club which is held once a month at the track.

Pits open Saturday at 3:00, which is an hour earlier than normal to help allow for opening night paperwork to get filled out.  At 5:00, the grandstand gates will swing open, while hotlaps begin on track at 6:00.  Racing will begin at its normal time 7:00.

Grandstand admission will be $15 for adults and free for kids 11 and under.
