The Tommy Show & Little Racing Score Twins Wins

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Memorial Day racing at Macon Speedway has been tradition for decades. Over recent years, the Memorial Day program has gone from a special NASCAR Night with drivers from the popular circuit to then becoming the night ran of the annual Twin 50s, an event started in 1985. Changes have occured through time with the race being just for Late Models to being shared by the Super Late Models and the Modifieds. On Memorial Day Monday, the Twin 50s returned and familiar winners graced victory lane.

Tommy Sheppard, Jr., the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified division champion of the past two seasons led all but one lap in the first race of the Twin 50s and scored the win. Only Jeremy Nichols would keep Sheppard from leading all 50. There were three caution flags within the first nine laps of the race but the race picked up with solid green flag laps until another yellow was thrown on lap 34. During that time, Sheppard’s lead grew by car lengths over Guy Taylor, Nichols, Kenny Wallace and Ray Bollinger. In a surprise, Kyle Helmick, a Pro Modified driver, raced solid and strong on the bottom and took third place but unfortunately pulled into the infield with nearly ten laps remaining.

Sheppard refers to his racing as “The Tommy Show” and spent much of his race up on the top side of the track and against the cushion. With Sheppard racing fast and hard, he was breathing heavy in the postrace interview. When asked how a driver feels about running 30 more laps than usual, Sheppard replied back “I need a Bud Light and a nap. Being elbows up for that long takes a lot out of you.”

The Super Late Models feature ran without a caution flag and was finished in 11 minutes. Greg Kimmons, former Sportsman track champion, led half of the laps from the bottom of the track but started to lose the lead when Jake Little picked up momentum on the top. Little had troubles during the heat race and finished in the back. A repair and a fix had him start tenth in the feature and he made up ground quickly during the constant green flag racing which put him in position to take control of the race on lap 29. Myles Moos did all he could to close the gap on the leader but ran out of laps.

Decatur Battery generously donated $250 to each Twins 50 winner.

A full stock racing program captivated a full house crowd at Macon Speedway as Jake Montgomery scored his first Pro Modified feature win as he started from the pole position. Nick Macklin outlasted Darrell Dick, Jeremy Nichols and Terry Reed to win in the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks. Molly Day started her night by getting a bad draw number and worked her way through the heat race to finish second. That finish helped her start on the pole of the Micro Sprints feature because of passing points awarded during the event. Holding off Devin Feger and a 23-car field, Day picked up the win. In a wild moment during the Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis, Aarik Andruskevitch rolled his Micro Sprint four times and then got it started up again and was able to continue but pulled in during the race as the car wasn’t meant to finish.

Tommy Duncan won his second feature in the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman feature as he stayed ahead of Jim Farley III and Dennis Vandermeersch to win two-straight 15-lap events. The night was finished off with Joe Reed returning to the winner’s circle in the Hornets as he took the lead away from Shelby Beiler midway through the race.

Former Hornet driver Vernon Carlow contributed $100 to the winner of the Hornet feature.

Seven divisions brought out over 125 entries on the Memorial Day holiday racing event.

Memorial Day kicks off the start of summer and a busy summer at Macon Speedway on Saturday nights. To begin June, Macon Speedway hosts non-wing sprint cars along with a full stock car racing program including the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Archer’s Alley Street Stocks, Pro Modifieds, Hornets and the J Smith & T Robertson non-wing sprint cars.

Parga, Sheppard, & Deal Claim Top Wins At Macon Speedway

(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway had another great night of racing this past Saturday, May 22. Six divisions were on track with over 40 bikes given away to kids in attendance.

New Berlin, IL driver, Jose Parga, was three-for-three coming into the night and after 20 laps of racing in the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model feature, Parga remained unbeaten with his fourth win. Following Parga were Colby Sheppard, Braden Johnson, Ryan Miller, and Eric Doran.

Springfield, IL driver, Guy Taylor led the first two laps of the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified feature before Jacob Steinkoenig led lap three. Unfortunately for the two aforementioned drivers, New Berlin, IL driver, Tommy Sheppard, Jr. was on the prowl and took over on lap four. Sheppard led the rest of the way, while Brazil, IN’s James Walters was challenging from second. At the checkered, Sheppard was followed by Walters, Steinkoenig, Alan Crowder, and Clint Martin.

Kyle Helmick led the first six paces in the DIRTcar Pro Mod feature before Brownstown, IL driver, B.J. Deal wrestled the top spot away. Deal, making his first appearance at the track this season, was on a rail, leading the rest of the way to claim the victory. Guy Taylor took second, while Helmick, Nathan Lynch, and Nick Justice completed the top five.

The Archers Alley Street Stock field of competitors knew they had their work cut out for them when Bobby Beiler took the green flag from the outside of row number one. Beiler, raced into the number one spot with some of the best drivers right behind him in Guy Taylor, Darrell Dick, and Nick Macklin. Beiler, from Blue Mound, IL, went on to claim the feature win with Macklin, Dick, Jeff Reed, Jr., and Taylor completing the top five.

Taylorville, IL driver, Scott Landers, took the lead at the green in the Weddle Performance Engine Sportsman feature event and never looked back, claiming the victory. Jim Farley, III, Rick Roedel, Wes O’Dell, and Roy Magee were the rest of the top five.

Brownstown, IL competitor Billy Mason took the lead at the green flag in the DIRTcar Hornet feature and set a commanding pace in the early going. Just when everyone thought he had it easily wrapped up, Allan Harris had moved from his eighth starting position into second. Over the last two laps, Harris kept Mason honest but was never able to pull alongside. Mason claimed the win, while Harris, Chris Wright, Adam Webb, and Shelby Beiler rounded out the top five.

In all, Macon Speedway gave over 40 bikes away due to generous donations by a number of individuals and businesses. Among those were Air King, Alexander Racing (Nia), Dennis Vandermeersch Racing, Donnelly Automotive Machine, Kurt Busch, Macon Speedway, Michelle Sutton, Mt. Zion Oddfellows, Secret Garden, The Bullet Trap, Whits End Macon, Walmart, Evergreen FS, Jose Parga, Jerry & Kelly Myers, Alan Crowder Racing, and J&J Motorsports Jamie Reich.

Macon Speedway Celebrates Armed Forces Night

(Full night of action available on video on demand at www.maconracing.tv)

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Members of the United States Army as well as the Marine Corps were present for Armed Forces Night and were part of the opening ceremonies with the National Anthem and then a veteran capped off the night with the final checkered flag feature win of the evening.

The night also started off in a great way for Warrensburg driver Dakota Ewing. In the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, Ewing not only set fast time but also broke his two-year time trials fast lap record by 0.042-second. The former mark of 10.794 was established May 4, 2019 by Ewing and he esclipsed that with a new time of 10.752 on Saturday night. His night was looking better after a heat race win and was leading the 20-lap feature five laps in. As the drivers were coming around for the ninth lap Ewing along with racing teammate Jose Parga got side-by-side out of the fourth turn and the combination nearly collided. Unfortunately, the momentum of the moment sent Ewing’s Pro Late Model into the concrete on the front stretch and his racecar slammed the wall. The night was over for Ewing. Parga would continue on to take the rest of the race and win the Pro Late Model feature for the third time in as many tries at Macon Speedway.

Zach Rhodes and his dad Curt Rhodes have raced together for years and Zach has been influenced by his dad since he was a kid to race. Macon Speedway hasn’t seen Curt Rhodes race in recent weeks and the reason why was his engine was taken out of his car and placed into his son’s car so he could continue to race. That help paid off for the younger Rhodes as he took to the top groove of the track and led the full 20 laps en route to his first BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds feature win of the season. Thanks to a front row starting spot, Rhodes was able to start off fast and strong ahead of fast drivers and previous feature race winners like Tommy Sheppard, Jr. and Guy Taylor. Sheppard would close in on Rhodes up top for the lead but ran out of laps and took the runner-up finishing spot.

A strong finish in his heat race put Kevin Crowder on the front row for the Pro Modified feature. A bad pill draw at the start of the night did not spoil his evening as he started in the back of the heat, raced to the front and thanks to passing points was on the front row of the feature. Much like Rhodes, the front row assignment was a help to keep him ahead of feature winning regulars like Billy Knebel and Kyle Helmick. Crowder ran solidly for the full 15 laps and coasted to the win.

New winners graced the winner’s circle at Macon Speedway in the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman, Archer’s Alley Street Stocks and Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis. Tommy Duncan of Metamora made the drive down to be part of the Sportsman division and made the most of it. In only his second time at the track, Duncan took the top honors and raced away from Scott Landers, Wes Odell, Jim Farley III and the driver who has gone 2-for-2 in feature wins, Jeremy Nichols. Duncan stayed low and gained traction and got the car moving to pass four drivers on his way to the lead.

Jeff Reed, Jr. has been racing Macon Speedway divisions for a long time in different divisions but hasn’t tasted much feature-winning success. Saturday night, Reed took his car to victory lane. The 19-car field originally saw Jeremy Nichols starting on the pole but he didn’t make it out at the first start of the race. Following an opening caution, Nichols arrived by was forced to start at the tail of the field. Reed was slated to begin third row inside but was bumped to second row inside behind Jaret Duff. With last time feature winner Bobby Beiler working hard to find a lane to speed up, Reed kept his car on the bottom and the set up worked perfectly. Nichols, who started at the back, flew through the order and would finish third in his fast-moving Street Stock.

Springfield’s Daryn Stark picked up the first checkered flag of his season at Macon Speedway with a 15-lap experience in the Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis. The race saw plenty of action from a Micro Sprint flip over to spin outs, the race was full of surprises. But Stark kept to his line and sprinted away to the victory.

The night was finished off by veteran Allan Harris of Chatham taking the win in the Hornets. The two-time feature winner was more than happy to hold on to the checkered flag on Armed Forces Night after racing away with the lead and the night.

Seven divisions of racing, over 100 entries and a completed full show in 3 hours 15 minutes. The fans at Macon Speedway were treated to another successful night of excitement. More fun awaits next Saturday with six divisions of racing and the kids will be excited to be at the track for a big bicycle giveaway. Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman, Archer’s Alley Street Stocks, Pro Modifieds and Hornets make up the show on May 22nd

95Q Armed Forces Night Set For Saturday At Macon Speedway

Active/Retired Military Members To Receive Free Tickets

(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway is set to go back to green this coming Saturday, May 15 with seven divisions of racing on 95Q Armed Forces Night at the track. Active and retired Military Members will receive free grandstand admission if they show ID proof at the ticket window.

The BillingsleyRewards.com Modified division has seen strong car counts and great racing over its first two nights of the year and there is currently a tie for the point lead. Springfield, IL driving veteran, Guy Taylor, and many-time track champion, Tommy Sheppard, Jr. are atop the standings, each winning features this season. Billy Knebel, Alan Crowder, and Kyle Helmick round out the top five in this year’s points.

New Berlin, IL driver, Jose Parga, is off to a great start, winning both Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model features so far. Parga leads the DIRTcar National Standings by a sizable margin as well as the Macon points by 6 markers over Jake Little. Colby Sheppard, Donny Koehler, and Dakota Ewing are top five point competitors.

Arguably some of the best action this season has come from the DIRTcar Pro Mod class. Kyle Helmick leads the points by just four over last year’s champion, Billy Knebel, and Kevin Crowder. Nick Justice and Jake Montgomery are fourth and fifth of the 20 cars that have been on track so far.

Lovington, IL driver Jeremy Nichols has been behind the wheel of the Rudy Zaragoza owned Street Stock over the first couple of weeks but it’s the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman standings that he currently leads. Nichols has dominated the two Sportsman races in the Street Stock car, claiming both victories. Scott Landers is second in points, while Jim Farley, III, Rick Roedel, and Dennis Vander Meersch complete the top five.

Argenta, IL’s Nick Macklin and Cerro Gordo, IL’s Terry Reed are atop the standings in the Archers Alley Street Stock class. Jaret Duff is third in the championship chase, while Guy Taylor and Jeremy Nichols round out the top five. Nichols and Bobby Beiler have claimed this year’s feature wins.

The DIRTcar Hornet division is led by Chatham, IL’s Allan Harris, who won the feature on opening night. Billy Mason has had two solid finishes and is second in points, while Shelby Beiler, Cook Crawford, and Jessica Lowe complete the top five.

Rounding out Saturday’s action will be the Micro By Bailey Chassis class. The division raced two weeks ago, had 25 cars in attendance, and put on a thrilling show for the fans in the stands. Aiden Purdue is the point leader after claiming the win, while Jacob Tipton, Alex Midkiff, John Barnard, and Hayden Harvey complete the top five.

In addition to the free admission for active and retired Military Members, Macon Speedway will also have an interactive Army display with activities.

Pits will open at 4:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps are at 6:00, and racing will go green at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $15, while kids 11 and under are free.
