KerbyStrong Succeeds at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) The 7th edition of the annual racing event named after former track champion Kerby Damery worked wonders once again in central Illinois on Saturday. The event that has been held regularly in July was moved to September in 2020 and stayed there during the 2021 schedule. Kerby’s widow Nikki has started each KerbyStrong event with a speech about the KerbyStrong Foundation’s importance as well as getting checked for cancer.

Kerby Damery loved to race Macon Speedway’s fast 1/5th mile dirt track and won championships in the Sportsman division and the Late Model division during his years as a driver. For that, KerbyStrong has honored those divisions as well as the Modified class with special purses and added laps during its years. Saturday night, the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model division would run a 40-lap feature for $1,200-to-win. Bonus money was put together by local businesses Phoenix Tile and Decatur Battery. And Jose Parga was indeed grateful.

Parga started the 40-lapper on the pole but would battle for the lead with Billy Knebel, who was racing in a Pro Late Model for the first time at Macon. Knebel would look to hold the lead out of the beginning of the race and was strong. However, a slip-up in the second turn coming to lap 16 put Parga in front and he charged away with the win.

The 15-lap feature for the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman division was filled with unique situations and a late lead change that took a checkered flag away from Guy Taylor. Taylor started fifth in the feature and worked his way to the lead racing with Jeff Reed, Jr. for the top spot. Caution flags flew to slow the pace of the race and caused some cars to leave the track, including Scott Landers, the second place driver in the division points, who left with a flat tire. As Taylor charged for the win, Tommy Duncan came charging from the back to take the lead and the win. Duncan had to be towed off the track in the heat race and came back to start last in the feature. He was starting 19th and ran up the field to take the lead with two laps remaining.

Guy Taylor was a crazy man on Saturday night. All season long, he has raced consistently in three divisions: BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Pro Modifieds and the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks. During KerbyStrong, he raced five of the six classes as he put his Street Stock in the Sportsman class and won his heat and finished second in the feature. He placed fourth in the Pro Late Model feature and he would get the checkered flag in the Modified feature race. Taylor charged hard for the lead and the win as he opened up early against Jeremy Nichols, Zach Rhodes and newcomer Mason Duncan. The race kept green flag racing to allow Taylor to open his lead. The race then turned to second place as Kyle Helmick, the ninth place starter and Pro Modified racer, challenging for second place with Nichols. Nichols made a mistake in the second turn of the final lap and it allowed Helmick to take the runner up position.

Helmick would take the winner’s circle in the Pro Modified feature race earlier in the evening. After making the pass on Kevin Crowder who pulled into the infield with a broken racecar early on, Helmick led the 14-car field around the track for another feature win.

The Archer’s Alley Street Stocks class was filled with potential winners and drivers who have tasted the glory of winning. The 15-lapper on Saturday was tasted by somebody who hasn’t had that taste in a long while. Maroa’s Randy Huffman has been a long-time racer and solid competitor, just hasn’t been able to win the races, until Saturday night. Alongside Guy Taylor and positioning himself ahead of Terry Reed and Nick Macklin, Huffman took to the bottom and stayed clean for the full race to make his night happen. Reed gave it everything he could to get around Huffman but he ran out of time. Macklin had to pull off the track for a tire change and came back to start last. Some crafty racing and speed caught him back up to third place when the checkered flag hit the air.

The final race of the evening was the Hornet class and Michael McKay scored his third feature win of the season. The race was a quick 15-lap event as there were no cautions and plenty of action. Shelby Beiler, Billy Mason, Allan Harris and McKay were all closing in for the lead but with the help of no cautions and clean racing between points leader Harris, McKay got across the line first.

The evening was filled with success for the KerbyStrong Foundation again. Over $1,000 was raised for the 50/50 raffle. Awareness was created about getting checked out for cancers. Sponsors added money to purses and created a Dash for Cash for the Pro Late Models. Kerby Damery’s legacy will continue to live on through this year’s quote: “The best things in life aren’t things at all.”

The 2021 Macon Speedway season completes next Saturday with the Brandt Season Championships for the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman, Archer’s Alley Street Stocks, Pro Modifieds and Hornets. Many championships are already decided while others will need the final night to sort out the rightful champ.

7th Annual KerbyStrong Event Saturday at Macon Speedway

(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway, in Macon, IL, is down to its final two races of the season and both should be a treat for fans. This Saturday, the track will be hosting its 7th annual KerbyStrong race, in memory of former track champion and many-time winner, Kerby Damery.

The KerbyStrong Foundation’s mission is to inspire, educate, and support cancer patients through their journey. Each year, the foundation and track celebrate Kerby and acknowledge those racing to win the fight against cancer in addition to raise funds for the foundation.

When it comes to the racing, the KerbyStrong event boasts specials for Pro Late Models, Modifieds, and Sportsman, three types of cars the late racer used to compete in. Each class will race for bigger trophies and more money for their feature events.

Williamsville, IL driver, Colby Sheppard, will lead the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models into the special event Saturday, having already claimed the track point championship with a 168-point advantage. Sheppard has won two races this year and will be one of the contenders. Others to watch include seven-time feature winner Jose Parga, last week’s feature winner Dakota Ewing, Braden Johnson, and Kerby Damery’s son, Blake. The Pro Late Model event is also the final Big Ten sanctioned race of the year.

The BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds point battle is still up for grabs but could be clinched by the end of the night. Guy Taylor, of Springfield, IL, has a 78-point advantage on Alan Crowder. Taylor has claimed four feature wins, while Crowder claimed his first just two weeks ago and backed it up with another strong finish last week. The Modified field has been strong with fields over 20 each of the last three weeks.

Kyle Helmick looks to be on his way to the DIRTcar Pro Mod championship, having a 70-point lead entering the night. Helmick has won six features this season and leads former champion, Billy Knebel, Kevin Crowder, Guy Taylor, and Nick Justice.

It’s been a minute, but the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman are back this week with Jim Farley, III leading the way by only two points over Scott Landers. Farley has yet to claim a feature win, while Landers has found victory lane once. Rick Roedel is third, Roy Magee fourth, and Dennis VanderMeersch complete the top five.

Veteran racer, Guy Taylor, could very well claim two championships this year, as he also leads the Archers Alley Street Stock standings. Taylor’s advantage in the class is 76 so he might claim both this Saturday night. Zach Taylor, Nick Macklin, Darrell Dick, and Jaret Duff complete the top five.

Rounding out Saturday’s program will be the DIRTcar Hornets. Allan Harris can also clinch the championship with a good run this week, having a 74-point lead over Billy Mason. Harris has won five features this year and has claimed 12 top five finishes in just 14 races.

Pit gates open at 4:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps begin at 6:00, and racing will begin at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $15 and kids 11 and under are free.

Racing Hits Home Stretch at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Following a week off for Labor Day, Macon Speedway racers hit the track with the final three weeks of racing for the 76th consecutive season. With the season points coming to a close, the final race nights are important for drivers who want to stake their claim as champions or higher finishers in the top ten standings.

Guy Taylor has been solidly racing three divisions all season long. In the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds and the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks Taylor is the points leader. In the Pro Modifieds division, he is the fourth place points driver. His points lead got extended with the a checkered flag finish in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds.

The 21-car, 20-lap race was filled with cautions but also excitement as the race started with a three-wide start with Alan Crowder, Zach Rhodes and Taylor all battling for the lead. Taylor started out down low but moved to the top groove and that decision carried him to the lead and the win. Crowder made a strong bid for his second straight feature win but held on for a second place result.

Taylor would take second place in the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks feature as Nick Macklin blasted off to the lead from the front row alongside Taylor. Macklin’s success carried him not only to a win at Macon but also to a Midwest Big Ten Series championship as Macklin would pass Taylor as well as the top two drivers who did not make the show, Terry Reed and Jeremy Nichols. One of the more impressive showings of the night came from Attica, Indiana, driver Megan Erwin. Starting 11th after a rough heat race saw her get things figured out and propelled her to a third place finish.

Taylor’s other feature race was in the Pro Modifieds where he took home third place after getting passed by Kevin Crowder for second place and both drivers chased Kyle Helmick for the lead. Helmick added to his points lead with the weekly racing starting to close out.

Dakota Ewing was not in a bad mood over his Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model after the feature race Saturday night. The Warrensburg driver has battled good nights and bad nights in that car this season but a great night of qualifying and heat race winning put him on the front row of the feature and after getting slowed by a lapped car in the middle of the feature was able to take off and keep the distance between Braden Johnson and Colby Sheppard. It will be too little too late for Ewing, however, as it relates to a 2021 track championship as Sheppard has better than 150 points lead over second place driver Donald Koehler with two weeks remaining.

The first 2021 Track Championship was claimed in the Micro Sprints by Bailey Chassis as Daryn Stark of Springfield finished the season with the most points. His night ended badly as he wasn’t able to finish the race as was towed off the track after a collision with six laps remaining. Aarik Andruskevitch, a 12-year-old from Riverton, took the top honor in the class for the night’s race. Hayden Harvey would finish second in the points standings and defending champion John Barnard would finish third in the points.

The night finished off with the Hornets as Ryan Cantrell and Allan Harris made the final lap a heart-stopper. Harris came from 11th place to challenge for the lead in the 15-lap feature. As the race came to the final turn, Harris bumped the left side of Cantrell’s new ride and nearly lifted him off the ground. As both cars hit the brakes, Cantrell was quicker to get back on the gas pedal and fly to the victory.

Macon Speedway was also welcomed by the Vintage Racing of Illinois cars and Mendota’s Matt Ramer, racing in a 1959 Pontiac, came through with the checkered flag. The six-car field saw many makes and models from a 1950 Oldsmobile to a 1950s Chevrolet Impala and a 1970 Camaro. The class was a fond memory of what racecars used to look like back in the day.

Macon Speedway wishes to thank its sponsors for the evening, the Decatur Convention Center & Visitor’s Bureau as well as Cromwell Media radio station Classic Country 98.1 GRIZ-FM. Next Saturday night will be a special night at the track with the 7th Annual KERBYSTRONG event featuring special races for the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds and the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman, three classes driven by Kerby Damery during his time as a racer before falling victim to cancer. Along for the schedule will be the Archer’s Alley Street Stocks, Pro Modifieds and Hornets.

Macon Speedway Drivers Set for Final Three Races

(Macon, IL) The 2021 racing season is winding down fast as Macon Speedway will determine all the point champions later this month. Only three race nights remain, including this Saturday, September 11th, where a Midwest Big Ten Series Street Stock champion will be crowned. Decatur Area Convention & Visitors Bureau/Griz 98.1 FM night will feature seven divisions, including a special visit from the Vintage Racing Of Illinois Series.

Co-headlining the event will be the Midwest Big Ten Street Stocks, which have run nine of their ten events this season. Saturday night, the 2021-point champion will be decided and the two drivers with the best chance are the only two to claim championships in series history, Terry Reed and Jeremy Nichols. Each have claimed three series championships.

Entering Saturday’s event, Cerro Gordo, IL’s Reed has a 14-point lead on Lovington, IL’s Nichols in the Big Ten standings. Despite being in second, Nichols might have the better chance to claim the championship as only the best eight finishes count toward the points. Nichols has a 34-point race to fall off, while Reed has a 50-point race that may fall off. If you look at it that way, Nichols virtually has a two-point advantage entering the final event. There are many scenarios that will keep the championship battle interesting.

The Vintage Racing of Illinois Series will be making their only visit of the season. The series features race cars of yesteryear and is a must see for lovers of vintage race cars. Not only are they great to see, they are fun to watch battle for the wins as they actually race hard for the trophy. The previous visit, a couple years ago, kept fans on the edge of their seats. A field in upwards of 12-14 cars is expected.

The Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models are back this week with Williamsville, IL driver, Colby Sheppard, leading the way. Sheppard has a 156-point lead in the division standings over Macon, IL’s Donny Koehler. Sheppard, who could lock up the championship this week, is coming off of his second win of the season two weeks ago, making a late race pass on Braden Johnson. Ryan Miller, Johnson, and Derek Smith complete the top five in points in the class.

Macon Speedway’s strongest division this year has been the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified class. The division has seen over 20 cars in each of the last two events, leading to exciting feature events. Springfield, IL’s Guy Taylor, leads the points by 70, having claimed three feature wins this season. Kyle Helmick in his Pro Mod, Alan Crowder who won the most recent race, Tommy Sheppard, and Billy Knebel round out the top five in points. Each driver in the top five has won at least one feature this year.

The aforementioned, Helmick, is leading the DIRTcar Pro Mod standings at the track by 64 over Knebel. Both drivers have run Mods and Pro Mods all season long, keeping them busy every Saturday night. Helmick has claimed five feature wins in the Pro Mod division, while Knebel, Kevin Crowder, and Guy Taylor in positions two through four, have claimed one each. Fifth place competitor, Nick Justice, has taken three victories.

Allan Harris, of Chatham, IL, is the DIRTcar Hornet point leader coming into Saturday’s action at the track. Harris has won five features throughout the 2021 season but has just a 52 point lead on Billy Mason, of Brownstown, IL. Shelby Beiler, in her rookie season, Justin Coffey, and Korey Bailey round out the top five in points.

One of the closest point battles every year seems to come in the Micros By Bailey Chassis division. 2021 is just the third year the track has counted the class as an official point collecting division. This Saturday’s event is the last one of the season for the Micros at Macon Speedway so a champion will be determined. Springfield, IL’s Daryn Stark leads the points by 32 over Warrensburg, IL’s Hayden Harvey, so it will be a battle of the #55 cars. John Barnard, Jacob Tipton, and Kyle Barker round out the top five in points.

Pits open Saturday at 4:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps begin at 6:00, and racing will take the green at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $15, while kids 11 and under are free.
