Late Passes Score Twin 50 Wins at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) In keeping with the annual tradition of Memorial Day racing at Macon Speedway, Monday night featured two 50-lap feature races for the premier classes in the circuit, the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models and the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds.

Alan Crowder worked a solid race in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds. He was positioned for a solid top-five finish with Highland’s Jacob Steinkoenig running away during the consecutive green flag lap series. Steinkoenig had the group close in on a restart on lap 34. Three laps later, Jeremy Nichols closed the gap and ran together with Steinkoenig. Nichols attempted to slide job Steinkoenig and closed him into the turn four concrete wall. Steinkoenig’s night would end on the back of the tow truck after a dominate start. Nichols, the second place driver, would be sent to the back of the 20-car field for bringing out the yellow and ending the leader’s night. That gifted Austin Lynn into the lead. Lynn would look ready to assume the win but Crowder started to inch closer to the leader. Running on the top was Crowder’s best line and he powered past Lynn with five laps remaining, holding on for a 50-lap feature win.

Also noted in the 50-lapper, Summerfield’s Rodney Standerfer started 18th position and took home 4th place. His hard charge led a $50 donation from Monkey Wrench Garage in Decatur.

Dakota Ewing used his patience to wait out Chase Osterhoff for the lead spot during the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model feature. The first 30 laps were Osterhoff’s to lead but Ewing took to the bottom of the track and the set-up was great for a mid-race takeover. Ewing would lead the final 19 laps and kept the distance from the Kankakee driver. Timmy Dick moved past Osterhoff for a second place finish.

Guy Taylor picked up his second Pro Modified feature win of the season. Austin Seets, two-time feature winner, started the feature off on the front row outside spot and rolled it up the wall on the opening lap and was knocked out of the race. Taylor was second row outside so when the race restarted, he moved into the front row outside spot and manuevered through for the checkered flag.

Zane Reitz from Indiana came back to the Macon Speedway winner’s circle during the 15-lap 51 Bistro Street Stock feature race. Reitz, a winner in April, made quick work on the 21-car group that featured Bobby Beiler, Tanner Sullivan and Nick Macklin–all drivers who have been checkered flag holders in races before at Macon.

Aarik Andruskevitch raced his way to the checkered flag by running the top side in a caution-less Micro Sprint feature race presented by Bailey Chassis. John Barnard led the first 18 laps and on lap 19, Andruskevitch pulled around Barnard and went to the victory.

The night concluded with Jimmy Dutflinger from Peoria taking the top spot in the Hornets feature. Dutflinger pulled ahead of David Lauritson and Tristan Quinlan to take control of the race and then fend off Jeremy Reed and others.

Macon Speedway comes to life again shortly. This Saturday night will be back in action with the Ed Cain Trucking Hornet Challenge and a 6-division night of racing. Lincoln Speedway will also feature the Ed Cain Trucking Hornet Challenge on Friday with a full racing program.

Memorial Day Monday Twin 50’s On Tap For Macon Speedway

(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway is set for its annual Memorial Day race, this coming Monday, May 30. Six full divisions of action will be racing but the headline events will be 50-lappers for the Decatur Building Trades Big 10 Pro Late Models and the BillingsleyRewards.com Big 10 Modifieds.

2022 Macon Speedway point champion, Colby Sheppard, out of Williamsville, IL, leads the field of Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models into town Monday. Four different winners have been in victory lane in four different races so far this season. Sheppard holds the point lead due to his consistency of top fives in all four events. Dakota Ewing, a former track champion, is second in points, while Colby Eller, Eric Doran, and Dalton Ewing complete the top five. Monday’s race will pay $1,000 to win and $125 to start.

Springfield, IL driver, Guy Taylor, last year’s champion in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified class, leads this year’s points in his Pro Mod, driving in both classes every week. Riverton, IL’s Tim Luttrell is off to a great start and is second in points, followed by Clint Martin, Jacob Steinkoenig, and Jarrett Stryker. Taylor, Steinkoenig, and Rick Conoyer have won features in the division this year. Much like the Pro Late Models, the Mods will pay $1,000 to win and $125 to start.

The aforementioned Taylor also leads the points in the DIRTcar Pro Mod class, taking one win and finishing in the top five all three races. Austin Seets, of Brighton, IL, has taken the other two feature victories and is just four points behind. Kevin Crowder, Zach Taylor, and Josh Robb round out the top five in the standings, entering Monday’s race.

The point leader in the 51 Bistro Street Stock division is still looking for his first win of the season. Cerro Gordo, IL’s Terry Reed sits atop the standings with three top five finishes but hasn’t found victory lane. Point runner-up, Bobby Beiler, has won a feature and is just two points behind. Jaret Duff, Rudy Zaragoza, and Brian Dasenbrock round out the top five. The class has seen three different winners in three nights of racing.

Decatur, IL driver, Jeremy Reed, has won two of the four features in the DIRTcar Hornet class and finds himself in the point lead over Tristan Quinlan by six points. Brady Reed, Taryn Page, and Billy Mason are others in point contention. Reed and Mason have also claimed feature events. The Monday Hornet race will be a tune-up for next weekend’s Ed Cain Trucking Hornet Challenge, featuring potential $1,000 to win races on Friday night at Lincoln Speedway and Saturday night at Macon Speedway.

A young driver from Riverton, IL, Aarik Andruskevitch, leads the points in the Micros By Bailey Chassis class. The division has seen great action this year, with large car counts and fast competitive racing. Many of the familiar faces over the last couple of years are up top in the standings again. Hayden Harvey, John Barnard, and Daryn Stark are again among those competing for victories weekly.

Monday’s action will be a little earlier than the normal Saturday night times with pit gates opening at 3:00, grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps at 5:00, and racing at 6:00. Grandstand admission is $18, while kids 11 and under are free.

Parga Returns to Macon Speedway Victory Lane

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Tough luck has kept Jose Parga from being at Macon Speedway. Whether it was timing and scheduling conflicts or a broken hauler, Parga had yet to appear at a track he won a lot of races. His return Saturday night propelled him to victory lane during the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model feature.

At the beginning of the race, Dalton Ewing was in control until his car got locked to the backstretch wall like a magnet and pulled his car to a stop in the third turn. When the race resumed, Parga was in the lead. And that turned into the beginning of the end. The closest race was between the second and third place cars, Colby Sheppard and Dakota Ewing. Sheppard managed to stay ahead of Ewing for the final 15 laps riding at the top of the track while Ewing was racing on the bottom groove. The top three separated themselves from fourth place through the end of the field.

Jacob Steinkoenig returned to the winner’s circle in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified feature race. Steinkoenig started fifth and got out to an early lead thanks to Nick Justice’s car giving out on him. The race was turning close in the final laps as last week’s feature winner Guy Taylor made his move to the front. Taylor started ninth and ran up and down the track to move to the front during the 20-lap feature race. Taylor ran out of time as Steinkoenig turned the laps in quickly and the race made consecutive green flag laps. Tim Luttrell was working towards the leader but ran into some slick spots and lost second place to Taylor. He managed to finish third. Zach Rhodes returned to Macon Speedway for the first time in 2022 and raced his father’s #10. Zach’s father Curt, a former BillingsleyRewards.com Modified champion, passed away earlier in 2022. Rhodes would finish fourth in the 17-car field.

Austin Seets took top honors in the Pro Modified division Saturday night. Starting from the pole but fending off Zach Taylor and Guy Taylor, the race was all but easy for Seets. Zach Taylor had taken the lead during the white flag lap but a spinout took the race lineup back to the way the drivers were scored on the last completed green flag lap which had Seets ahead of Taylor. Guy Taylor was caught in the spinout and tore up his right side of the car. He would exit the track and came back out. He was no longer able to be third place and had to go to the tail of the field. When the race returned to green, Seets kept his bottom line groove and won over Taylor.

Dennis Vandermeersch took the win in the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman division. After a dicey beginning and middle, the race calmed down after cars were wrecking and bouncing off the wall and each other.

Bobby Beiler took the top spot in the 51 Bistro Street Stocks. Coming from the third row inside position, Beiler made his move for the lead on the seventh lap and re-positioned Terry Reed to second place. Jaret Duff came the top of the track to score second place in the feature results as Reed came to third place. Zach Reitz from Indiana started third, went to the back for spinning out a driver with two laps complete, and ran up the field to finish fourth. Jordan Smith took the fifth place finishing spot.

A 16-year-old kid graced the Macon Speedway victory lane as Daryn Stark from Springfield was the winner in the Micro Sprint feature presented by Bailey Chassis. Coming from fifth starting place, Stark zinged his way to second place and was running behind Brody Strong, the polesitter. On lap 9, Stark made his move and took off, passing Strong and never looking back as he went on to score the checkered flag.

The 7-division night of racing finished with the Hornets as Jeremy Reed picked up feature win number two at Macon Speedway. Reed got ahead of Jacob Shanks on lap 2 and then took away with the lead. For the final 15 laps of the feature, he was tailed and followed bumper-to-bumper by Mike Eskew. Eskew was not able to make his move for the lead and pass Reed. Last week’s feature winner Brady Reed took third as he started tenth place.

The 7-division night of racing was finished a few minutes after 10pm with nearly 100 racecars in the pits. The night was also full with bicycle giveaways during the CEFCU Kids Club Big Bike Giveaway. 25 sponsors donated bicycles for kids to win Saturday night with more than 40 new bicycles going home to lucky race fans.

Lincoln Speedway hosts the Vintage Racing of Illinois Series on Friday night. Pro Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks, D-2 Midgets, Hornets and the VRI will make up a great night racing. Saturday night at Macon Speedway is the 95Q Armed Forces Night where active military with proper ID will be admitted for free. Another 7-division night of racing will on hand with the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman, 51 Bistro Street Stocks, Pro Modifieds, Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis and the Hornets will be on the schedule.

Top Groove Powers Cummins to Macon Speedway Win

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Kyle Cummins of Princeton, Indiana, started on the pole of the POWRi Midgets feature at Macon Speedway Saturday night but fell back to as far as third before catching the leader and taking the lead with three laps to go. It was all thanks to the top side of the 1/5th mile where Cummins caught on fast and powered past Cannon McIntosh. McIntosh, who also started on the front row, led the first 27 laps and looked like a 30-lap wire-to-wire winner until Cummins went towards the groove closest to the concrete.

The race was hampered by caution flags during the second half of the race. Of the seven yellow flags, only two were during the first 20 laps of the race. The final five cautions occurred in the final eight laps of the race. The action was terrific during the green flag laps during the 11-lap consecutive string between lap 5 to 16.

The same could be spoken for the POWRi Micro Sprint series. The race only featured two cautions and Joe B. Miller of Millersville, Missouri, had little trouble with the 22-car field. He led from the pole and took all 20 laps. Craig Ronk, who won on Opening Night, closed in the lead during the two restarts but could never get anywhere close to the leader during the green flag laps.

The Billingsley Rewards.com Modifieds saw Guy Taylor win the race which started 25 of the 26 cars signed in. Many expected a demo derby or a cluster of cautions, the Modifieds were outstanding. Only a yellow flag midway through the race due to a car that was slowing outside of the second turn kept the event from going 20 uninterrupted laps.

While the racing was going on during the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified feature, Illini Racing Supply top qualifier Brian Diveley was looking for the sweep–started the night as fastest qualifier and won his heat–started in the front row of the feature and was in great position for a feature win until Guy Taylor came along. The Springfield driver and former division champion started sixth and pushed his Pro Modified to the bottom and then to the top as lapped traffic became an issue. The race was frantic during the late stages but the veteran driver kept moving through the crowd and into victory lane.

Dakota Ewing scored his first feature checkered flag on the third night of racing at Macon. His dominance on the bottom after overtaking Timmy Dick for the lead would be enough early on. The racing from second place on was the real story as Dick had to fend off Illini Racing Supply top qualifier Colby Sheppard. A big collision led to a mess on the front stretch as Brandon Sweitzer had his car turned upside down in an entanglement with Ryan Miller and others. All drivers would escape without harm but the cars will be in need of TLC.

A 20-car field of Hornets started 19 cars with R33D Racecars and Monkey Wrench Garage kicking in bonus money to the first finisher to not race at Macon this season. Bartonville driver Nick Johnson finished fourth and took the $150 bonus money. But the checkered flag and feature win went to Brady Reed from the pole position. It wasn’t an easy win for the former champion as Tristan Quinlan made sure to let him know that he had a race on his hands. Jeremy Reed, feature winner from two weeks ago, started 11th and flew to the front midway through the race and took third place. Dale’s Tackle also threw in an extra $100 to the feature winner.

Macon Speedway hosted 115 racecars among five racing divisions Saturday night. Next Saturday night will feature seven divisions with the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman, Bistro 51 Street Stocks, Pro Modifieds, Micro Sprints by Bailey Chassis and the Hornets. Plus, the CEFCU Kids Club will be happening and there will be a BIG kids bicycle giveaway!

Macon Speedway’s sister track Lincoln Speedway prepares for a HUGE event with the Castrol FloRacing Night in America with the Super Late Models going for $22,022-to-win! Plus the Modifieds will race this Thursday. More information is available at lincolnspeedwayil.com.
