Ripple’s Auto Body Night Filled With Great Action At Macon Speedway

(Macon, IL) Nearly 100 cars were pitside for the Ripple’s Auto Body Open Wheel Extravaganza at Macon Speedway this past Saturday night. Joining the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets were the Built Ford Tough MOWA Sprint Cars for the top notch doubleheader. Three other classes also raced.

“The Dauminator” Zach Daum took all 25 laps in the MOWA Sprint Car feature on Saturday night. The driver from Pocahontas, IL., made quick work of the 18-car division and resisted the challenge from Slater Helt and Paul Nienhiser early and often. The win was the third by Daum at Macon Speedway in the MOWA series, the most by any MOWA driver.

Cannon McIntosh came to life midway through the race and made a pass for the lead for his second consecutive feature win of the POWRi Midgets at Macon Speedway. New Zealand racer Michael Pickens raced to second place.

In the POWRi Micro Sprints series, Macon Speedway regular Daryn Stark flew across the top of the track to pass Jeremy Camp and get the win in the second half of the 20-lap race. Stark, a former track champion and one-time feature winner in 2022, came through the entire race from the top and ended up grabbing the checkered flag at the finish line.

Taylorville, IL driver, Braden Johnson, who had won two out of the last three features at the track, took the lead on lap one from his second starting spot. Behind him, it was a battle of the Eller brothers, Colby and Curtis. As the two diced for second, it was Johnson pulling away out front. At the checkered, Johnson was followed to his fourth feature win by Colby Eller, Ryan Blair, Derek Smith, and Curtis Eller.

Springfield, IL veteran, Guy Taylor, continued his dominance in the DIRTcar Pro Mod division, leading every lap on his way to his eighth feature win of the season. While he checked out, the action from second on back was exciting with Dean Holt, Austin Seets, B.J. Deal, and others mixing it up. At the checkered, Taylor was followed by Seets, Deal, Adam Rhodes, and Zach Taylor.

Up next for Macon Speedway is the Diane Bennett Memorial on Saturday, August 6. Over $11,000 has already been collected and added to the purse for the six divisions in action. The Decatur Building Trades Big 10 Pro Late Models, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, DIRTcar Pro Mods, 51 Bistro Big 10 Street Stocks, DIRTcar Hornets, and HART Non-Wing Micros will be in action.

MOWA Sprint Cars & POWRi Midgets Invade Macon Speedway Saturday

(Macon, IL) Ripples Auto Body night features a rare doubleheader of wicked fast open wheel racing action this coming Saturday, July 30. The Built Ford Tough MOWA Sprint Cars will be making their only appearance of the season, while the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League will be in town as well. Three other classes will also race.

Saturday’s event at Macon will be the first visit for the MOWA Sprint Cars since 2020, after falling victim to a rainout in 2021. Zach Daum is the last driver to visit victory lane with the series at the ⅕-mile. Seven drivers in total have won events at Macon Speedway. Daum, Jerrod Hull and Terry Babb each have two victories to their credit. Adam Jones, Paul Nienhiser, Jacob Patton and Danny Smith all have a single win.

The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League, much like MOWA, will be doing the double this weekend with races at Jacksonville Speedway on Friday night before traveling to Macon Speedway on Saturday. For POWRi, the series will be making it’s third appearance of the season. Kyle Cummins won in exciting fashion during the May race, while Oklahoma driver, Cannon McIntosh claimed the Midget week victory in June.

The POWRi Engler Machine and Tool Micros will join the Macon Speedway Bailey Chassis Micros for their fourth season appearance. Craig Ronk, Joe B. Miller, and TJ Smith have each claimed a POWRi Micro win at Macon this season. Saturday’s race will be filled with a strong field including many of the Macon regulars.

There has been a change at the top of the Decatur Building Trades DIRTcar Pro Late Model standings, as Colby Eller leads the division into Saturday night’s action. Eller challenged for the win last week but came up just short. Dakota Ewing is second in points followed by Rockett Bennett, Ryan Miller, and Colby Sheppard.

Springfield, IL’s Guy Taylor has been nearly unbeatable this year in the DIRTcar Pro Mod class, winning seven of the eleven feature events. Taylor will be looking for his fourth feature win in-a-row on Saturday night. Kevin Crowder remains second in points, while Zach Taylor, Maxx Emerson, and Matt Milner complete the top five.

Pit gates for Saturday’s event will open at 3:00 PM, while grandstands open at 5:00, hotlaps at 6:00, and racing at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $25, while kids 11 and under are free.

Vandermeersch Scores Topless 40 Victory

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Dennis Vandermeersch ran the top of the Macon Speedway on a hot and humid Saturday night to secure a 40-lap feature win while the Weddle Performance Engines division ran the evening without a roof on the racecars. It was nothing new to Vandermeersch as he claimed his fifth straight 40-lap feature win in the annual race. Although he led all 40 laps, it was not without heavy challenges from the second place car Wes O’Dell. O’Dell stayed on Vandermeersch’s bumper for nearly all the laps and followed him around through every turn and straightaway; he just didn’t have what was needed to make the pass and take control.

For Vandermeersch, it was also the sixth time he has won the 40-lapper in the 12-year history of the race dating back to 2011. It is also the second time that he led all 40 laps en route to the checkered flag. The final ten or so laps were more difficult than just keeping ahead of O’Dell as he announced that he lost control of his brakes. The 40 laps were completed in 20 minutes and had only five caution flags.

The finish of the night came in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds feature race. With Macon Speedway co-owner Kenny Wallace in the house racing in the division, everybody was out to give it their all against the driver leading the National Points in the Modified class. Wallace was a fast qualifier and won his heat and that helped set him up on the front row outside of the 20-lap feature with 23 cars. Wallace ran the bottom and stayed ahead of Clint Martin, Alan Crowder, Rodney Standerfer and Billy Knebel in the early goings. Knebel hooked up on the bottom, too, and passed all the way to second place and challenged Wallace for the top spot. When Wallace and Knebel were running around the bottom of the fourth turn, Knebel bumped and got bumped and spun out to bring out a caution flag. The caution was for Knebel who was sent to the back of the field with half the race remaining. Eyes started to watch Wallace and Standerfer run on the bottom and Zach Rhodes, the eighth place starter, surging strong on the top groove. Rhodes strongly challenged as he gained speed and momentum through the corners. As the white flag was waving, it was Rhodes and Wallace sticking to their lines and as they came out of the final turn to the finish it was a drag race that Wallace took by the slimmest of margins.

Wallace appreciated the race that Rhodes gave and believed his car didn’t run good or well enough to win on this night. He dedicated to the race to Zach Rhodes’ father Curt, who passed away at the beginning of 2022. Curt was a former BillingsleyRewards.com Modified track champion and also raced other divisions in his time at Macon Speedway.

The Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models class saw twists and turns throughout that 20 laps as Braden Johnson took his third feature win of the year. He was tangled up in a mess with Chase Osterhoff in the third turn of lap 13. As Osterhoff was pulled away by the tow truck, Johnson got back on the track and assumed his second place position behind Colby Eller. As they came around to the green flag and the next lap, Johnson bypassed Eller and ran away. Timmy Dick led the early stages of the race but was caught with lapped traffic and bounced off the first turn tractor tire that took away his chance at the first feature win of his season at Macon.

Guy Taylor got the feature programs started with his seventh win of the season in the Pro Modified class. The race was ran very quickly with no yellow flags or stoppages. Taylor ran away from the rest of the 16 cars.

The 51 Bistro Street Stocks saw Jeremy Nichols race from the pole to lead all 15 laps and win in the 67R car that is normally raced by Rudy Zaragoza. The win stopped the 3-race streak that Zane Reitz had as Reitz started in the middle of the pack.

Devin Feger led the laps to win the Micro Sprint feature Presented by Bailey Chassis. Not only holding off the runs by Aarik Andruskevitch but also his girlfriend Molly Day and current points leader John Barnard through the bottom line of the track, Feger claimed his first feature win of the year.

The night was capped off by a new Hornets feature winner in Paul Lawhorn of Mattoon. The race appeared to be won by Michael McKay as he fended off the fight from Mike Eskew, David Lauritson and Billy Mason but then Lawhorn went to the top of the track and sped by McKay in the final laps to make it a winner for the Mattoon driver.

The seven division night sponsored by Weddle Performance Engines saw over 100 entries and some hearty race fans in the stands on a day when the temperatures nearly reached 100 degrees and the heat index was well over 100.

Macon Speedway’s sister track Lincoln Speedway will host a special Sunday Funday with cooler temperatures. Six divisions will race and three of those divisions will participate in Midwest Big Ten Series race events: Pro Late Models, Modifieds and Street Stocks. The Sportsman, Division 2 Midgets and Hornets are also on the schedule. Macon Speedway finishes July with the MOWA Sprint Cars, POWRi Midgets & Micro Sprints plus the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models and Pro Modifieds.

Topless Sportsman 40 To Headline Saturday Night’s Macon Speedway Action

Seven Divisions To Race On Weddle Performance Engines Night

(Macon, IL) Weddle Performance Engines night will feature a special event for the division that they sponsor, the Sportsman class. A 40-lapper will be run at Macon Speedway this Saturday, with the teams removing the roof of each racecar for annual Topless Sportsman feature event. Six other divisions will also race.

Springfield, IL driver, Dennis Vander Meersch leads the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman into the night after winning four of the seven features so far this year. The veteran driver has a 38-point lead over Rick Roedel of Shelbyville, IL. Scott Landers, Jim Farley, III, and Phil Moreland round out the top five in points. Saturday’s race should be a good one as the Sportsman fields have been strong and are coming off of a good race on Wednesday night in Taylorville.

The Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models are back at it Saturday night with former champion, Dakota Ewing, leading the way. Ewing is followed by teammate Rockett Bennett, who is the youngest driver in the class, Colby Eller, Ryan Miller, and Colby Sheppard. Ewing, Sheppard, and Braden Johnson each have two feature wins, while Jose Parga has five and Dalton Ewing has one.

Quite the battle is building at the top of the BillingsleyRewards.com DIRTcar Modified standings. Coming into Saturday’s event, only four points separate leader Guy Taylor, of Springfield, IL, and Summerfield, IL’s Rodney Standerfer. Taylor has won two features in the class, while Standerfer has claimed three. Alan Crowder is third in the standings with Tim Luttrell and Zach Taylor in the mix.

The DIRTcar Pro Mods, 51 Bistro Street Stocks, DIRTcar Hornets, and Micros By Bailey Chassis will also race on Saturday night.

Pit gates open at 4:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps are at 6:00, and racing will take the green at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $15, while kids 11 and under are free.

2022 Christian County Races Excite Fairgoers; Nichols Impresses

(Taylorville, IL) The annual Christian County Ag Fair races were held this past Wednesday, July 20 and the action on track was excellent once again. Another solid field of cars was on hand with 20 Midwest Big Ten Street Stocks, 15 Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman, and 10 Hornets to race in front of a sizable crowd.

Lovington, IL driver, Jeremy Nichols put on a show at this year’s fair races, which should not be a big surprise. Nichols came into the event with three Sportsman wins and four Street Stock wins over the last eight years. Wednesday night, Nichols added one more trophy in each class by taking the top two features.

Nichols started third in the Sportsman feature and passed Scott Landers to take the lead and the eventual win. What he did in the Big Ten Street Stock event was even more impressive. Nichols started 7th in the 20-car field of Street Stocks. Moving to the top lane of the track, Nichols passed car after car before taking the top spot from Megan Erwin for the victory.

The Hornet race saw Derrick DeFord and Allan Harris in a great battle at the front of the pack. DeFord led early but Harris got a great run to take the spot away. The Hornets went flag-to-flag in a competitive but clean race.

The Christian County Fair and Track Enterprises have been hosting one race date a year as part of the fair since 2014. Car counts and crowds have been noticeably better the last couple of seasons and the racing on track was at its best on Wednesday night.

Johnson & Parga Split Double Features at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Thanks to a rain-shortened event on June 25th, Macon Speedway hosted a double feature night of racing for the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models. All 14 of the cars who were at Macon on that final June Saturday were in attendance to run that race as well as the full show of racing from the nightly program.

Braden Johnson took advantage of a front row outside starting spot to pull away from the group of cars to win the first feature of the night. The race wasn’t very close for the lead as the race went 20 laps without a caution but Dakota Ewing was making a run for the lead in the closing laps. In the second 20-lap feature, Jose Parga got the pole position starting spot and managed to keep his distance from Colby Sheppard for the lead. Parga won his fifth feature of the year and his third feature in the last four races. Some of the excitement was the crossover battle between Johnson & Ewing as they performed slide jobs and bumps through the turns.

The 51 Bistro Street Stocks put together a great race to the finish with former champion Terry Reed and Indiana driver Zane Reitz. Neither driver is a stranger to victory lane and they both were working hard to get back there. Reed got ahead of Reitz to begin the race as he powered ahead for the top spot but Reitz came back in the second turn of lap 6 to take the lead and look to hold on. With the final laps coming, Reitz started to smoke up and Reed was coming fast. Despite the car smoking and sparking and the right rear tire starting to go flat on him, Reitz came through ahead and won his fifth feature win of the year and third straight.

Guy Taylor won the Pro Modified feature for the sixth time. After a tough start with front row driver Austin Seets that led to Seets on the end of the tow truck before the first lap was complete, Taylor led all 15 laps and was challenged by John Seets III.

Taylor matched up well with Rodney Standerfer as the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified feature came to a finish. Taylor won over Tim Luttrell last Saturday night and looked to steal one from Standerfer this week but Standerfer’s #28 was fast enough to stay ahead and claim his third checkered flag of the season.

Things looked easy for pole sitter Brody Strong of Arthur in the Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis but John Barnard and Daryn Stark weren’t going to let him slip away that easily. Barnard charged to Strong and the lead midway through the race but ran out of time and Strong caught a good groove and moved to the win.

And it was deja vu all over again for Trisin Quinlan. Last week, led many laps and fought off Brady Reed and Billy Mason to the finish but Reed came up and won. This week, the same trio was at the front and once again, it was Reed getting the lead and then the checkered flag ahead of Mason and Quinlan in the 15-lap Hornet feature.

The night also included the annual Faster Pastor race on Church Night. Ed Cain from Macon’s First Baptist Church won the top honor, his second Faster Pastor win and first since 2017. He finished ahead of Keith Ferrill of Heartland Community–now known as The Cross–in Decatur and John Morthland from New Testament Church in Decatur.

Track Enterprises presents a special three-division night of racing Wednesday at the Christian County Fair in Taylorville with the Sportsman, Street Stocks and Hornets racing. Next Saturday night, Macon Speedway presents a seven-division show with the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman division going topless for 40 laps.

Taylor Doubles Up at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Guy Taylor is at it again. Taylor won championships and point series during the 2021 season with a lot of help and a little luck. 2022 continues to prove that the help and the luck is still there. After taking all 15 laps in the Pro Modified feature race, Taylor wheeled his Pro Modified into the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds A-Modified feature race with a tenth place starting position and looked like a lock for a top five finish. Then things started to happen. On the restart during lap 16, leader Tim Luttrell was challenged by second place driver Jared Thomas. As they got together, Thomas got loosened up and fell midway through the field of 22-starting cars. As the flag laps started to come, Taylor’s car worked its way to the front to take the lead on lap 19 and then be the first across the finish a lap later. Luttrell’s bid for his first Macon Speedway feature win will need to wait one more week, at least, because Taylor stole the show.

Dustin’s Lucky Slots in Taylorville chipped in with a $100 bonus to the winner of both Pro Modified and BillingsleyRewards.com Modified features. The money went to the same guy…Guy Taylor.

The big feature attraction for the night was the Bistro 51 Street Stocks racing in the Bruce Dulgar Classic, a special race in honor of a former champion, official and friend of Macon Speedway and racing in general, Bruce Dulgar. The $750-to-the-winner prize along with the 6-foot trophy went to a familiar face in Macon Speedway’s victory lane during 2022–Zane Reitz. The driver from Veedersburg, Indiana, has won three times already at Macon during the season and he added another win to the total, including back-to-back weeks.

The race also featured the return of “Mr. Excitement,” Al Crawley. Crawley was a Macon Speedway winning regular in the Modified class during the 1980s & 1990s, claiming many championships along the way. After taking his heat race by leading all eight laps, Crawley was positioned in the front row along with Reitz. When the race went green, Crawley spun in the first & second turns and was tagged by another car which popped the radiator and led to a liquid trail coming from his car. Crawley’s night would be over before the first lap would be recorded. Reitz would be fast and strong to the finish.

A couple of champions and long-time drivers matched up toe-to-toe in the Weddle Performance Engines Sportsman division feature. Dennis Vandermeersch and Wes O’Dell were giving it all they had to put on a show and also go for the checkered flag. Vandermeersch looked locked in for the trophy but O’Dell got things together and made a run at the leader. Vandermeersch powered forward and claimed his fourth feature win of 2022.

The Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model feature was another race that was filled with late passing and a strong finish as Jose Parga made it number four on the year. Colby Sheppard was looking to get the checkered flag once again and was in control for most of the first part of the 20 laps. Sheppard kept trying to run up the track but missed his spots and his line and was bouncing off the cushion of dirt and slowing his car down that allowed Parga to put together the rally he needed to take the lead on lap 13. With seven laps to go, Parga was holding the checkered flag.

Hayden Harvey of Warrensburg has had a tough season but put together a good night in the Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis. After using a late pass to win his heat race, Harvey started second row inside and after leader John Barnard came off the track after the first lap, Harvey seized the opportunity to lead and took off. Daryn Stark chased him down but couldn’t catch up to Harvey as he claimed his first win of the year.

The night’s racing was capped off with a small field of Hornets but an exciting race was shown as Tristin Quinlan nearly got his first win of 2022. A caution flag brough the action to a slower pace that allowed Brady Reed to get by and take the lead from the top. For the first nine laps, Quinlan did all he could to stop Reed as well as David Lauritson and Billy Mason from taking the lead away. The action was really impressive with those four drivers from start to finish.

Next Saturday night Macon Speedway hosts Church Night as area pastors race to determine who is the Faster Pastor. The Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models will race two features as they make up the rained out feature from June 25th. Plus action from the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, 51 Bistro Street Stocks, Pro Modifieds, Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis and the Hornets.

Macon Speedway Set For 42nd Herald & Review 100 Thursday

(Macon, IL) The 42nd annual Herald & Review 100, one of the most popular races on the Summer Nationals tour each year, is set to go green this Thursday, July 7 at Macon Speedway. The 1/5-mile high banked dirt track held it’s first Herald & Review race in 1981 and the list of winners throughout the years continues to impress.

From the early years with the likes of Butch Garner, who won the first race, Bob Pierce, Jim Leka, Dick Taylor, Scott Bloomquist, Kevin Weaver, and Billy Moyer to recent years with Moweaqua, IL’s own Shannon Babb, Bobby Pierce, Brian Shirley, Ryan Unzicker, Gordy Gundaker, and Brandon Sheppard, the talent that has found Macon Speedway victory lane is unmatched.

This Thursday night’s event will add another name, or perhaps an experienced one who has already claimed the elusive trophy, to the long list of winners. Could it be a first timer, maybe someone like Jason Feger, who is coming off of an impressive victory at Lincoln Speedway this past Sunday night or maybe someone with plenty of track experience and championships like Tommy Sheppard, Jr.

The tour has had a few days off to regroup from the race of the year at Lincoln Speedway. Sunday’s event saw Pierce, Unzicker, Feger, and Babb racing hard for the win. Contact between Pierce and Unzicker took them out of the picture but Feger and Babb raced side-by-side to the checkered. The Thursday night race at Macon Speedway should be another barn burner.

Pierce currently leads the Summer Nationals standings by 78 points over Brian Shirley. Pierce has claimed four wins to Shirley’s three this season. Jason Feger is third in points, while Payton Freeman and Ryan Unzicker complete the top five.

Adding to the fun will be the Summit Modified Nationals competing with the track’s BillingsleyRewards.com Modified competitors. Mooresville, NC driver Nick Hoffman has won ten of the twelve starts he has made with the tour this year, putting him atop the standings. Hoffman was equally dominant last season but missed the Macon Speedway event. The track is coming off a topless Modified event this past Saturday that saw 27 drivers attempt to make the show.

Pit gates for Thursday’s event will open at 3:00 PM with grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps at 6:00, and qualifying at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $30, while kids 11 and under are $5. An all-access pit/grandstand band will be available for $40.

Macon Speedway will turn right back around after Thursday’s event to get ready for this Saturday’s 1st Responders Night which features free grandstand admission for first responders. The Bruce Dulgar Classic will be held for the 51 Bistro Street Stock class and kids will get to ride in racecars at intermission.
