Standerfer Completes Clean Sweep at Macon Speedway

By BZ

(Macon, IL) It all starts with qualifying. At least for the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models and the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, it does. The other divisions draw for their starting positions. As for Rodney Standerfer in the BillingleyRewards.com Modifieds, qualifying was just the beginning of his success. Of the 17 cars in his division, Standerfer was the quickest car across the 1/5th mile track. That helped set him up on the front row of his heat race due to the division going fastest-to-slowest in order. After the eight laps, Standerfer had a win. Thanks to a dice roll inversion, Standerfer started in the third position, second row inside, and needed a good start to move past Jeremy Nichols and Tim Luttrell for the lead. He managed to do so and then held off the rest of the cars to nab his fourth feature win of 2022 and extend his points lead in the division over Guy Taylor. Taylor entered the night 24 points behind Standerfer for the track championship and the lead would grow as Taylor finished behind Luttrell and Cody Stillwell.

Taylor would continue his dominance in the Pro Modified class. The action was intense for the lead for the 15 laps as Taylor didn’t get to have this one easy with Max Emerson pursuing for his first feature win. Taylor still managed to pull away for his tenth feature of the year and sixth in a row but it was a close battle through the laps and the traffic.

Nick Macklin has had a roller coaster of a weekend. After a roll over in Jacksonville on Friday night, Macklin took the car apart and put it back together with just a few hours sleep to have his 51 Bistro Street Stock ready to compete on Saturday. Macklin would get the checkered flag for the third time in 2022 and first time since the end of June. Macklin used the top groove to pick up speed and pull away from Andy Zahnd, Rudy Zaragoza and Gene Reed.

Another return to victory lane was Braden Johnson in the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models. A full 20 laps of action took Johnson to the checkered flag as he dodged lapped traffic and second place racer Jose Parga to take feature number five on the year.

Aarik Andruskevitch sailed away from the 12 cars in the Micro Sprints presented by Bailey Chassis. Andruskevitch won for the third time in the year.

Tristin Quinlan finally had nobody stand in his way or rip away his first feature win. Previous weeks saw Brady Reed take away the checkered flag but with a small band of cars, Quinlan stood tall and won the battle over Billy Mason, Bridget Fulton and Stacy Eskew.

11-year-old Gavyn Parmele of Bloomington went wire-to-wire in the Kid Modz 8-lap feature race event. The kid from Bloomington also won the heat race over three other kid drivers.

The night featured intermission entertainment with nine spectators racing in the Spectator Drags. The first event brought six competitors in April and the second event saw nine competitors race a lap for the chance at winning. Gage Lee raced a 1989 red Ford Mustang and won four races to claim the title.

The big August auto racing weekend is coming! Friday night at Lincoln Speedway with the MOWA Sprint Cars, Pro Late Models, Modifieds, Division II Midgets, Hornets and Kid Modz. Saturday afternoon at the Illinois State Fair brings the USAC Silver Crown Bettenhausen 100 Presented by Hunt Brothers as well as the Sportsman Nationals qualifying and heat races followed by POWRi Midgets & Micro Sprints plus BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Pro Modifieds and Hornets at Macon Speedway. The finale of the weekend is back in Springfield to close out the Illinois State Fair with the ARCA Menard’s Series Atlas 100 along with the Sportsman Nationals feature race. Visit trackenterprises.com for ticket information as well as schedules for Saturday & Sunday.

Spectator Drags & Seven Divisions Ready for Macon Speedway Saturday

(Macon, IL) Race fans will be treated to beautiful weather, seven divisions of racing, Spectator Drags, and CEFCU Kids Club this coming Saturday, August 13 at Macon Speedway. The event will be a Melling Race Weekends Across America Tour, courtesy of Contingency Connection.

The evening’s special presentation will be at intermission when fans will get a chance to compete on track in the first edition of Spectator Drags this season. Macon Speedway officials are only accepting eight entries of those who would like to race their street legal vehicle on the racetrack in a bracket style tourney at intermission. There is no charge to compete and only a couple spots remain. To enter, call the office at 217-764-3000.

Taylorville, IL’s Colby Eller is now on top of the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model standings by 22 over Ryan Miller. Not far behind the two are Braden Johnson and Rockett Bennett, making for what could be an exciting four-man race for the championship. Guy Taylor raced with the class in an Eller car last week and claimed the Diane Bennett Memorial event.

Rodney Standerfer comes into Saturday’s event just 24 points ahead of Guy Taylor in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modified class. Standerfer has claimed three feature wins this year, while Taylor has two and third place pointman, Alan Crowder, has one. Tim Luttrell and Jarrett Stryker round out the current top five in points. Zach Taylor is in the mix as well, coming into the event in a virtual tie with Stryker for fifth.

Guy Taylor, barring any major issues, looks to be on his way to the DIRTcar Pro Modified championship, having a 90-point lead with nine feature wins. His nephew, Zach Taylor and Kevin Crowder are tied for second in points, while Maxx Emerson, coming off of a strong run, and the ever-improving Dean Holt complete the top five.

Cerro Gordo, IL driver, Terry Reed has a commanding lead in the 51 Bistro Street Stock division standings, leading by 116 over Bobby Beiler. Reed has been a model of consistency all season, claiming 12 top fives in 14 starts. Beiler is coming off an impressive win last Saturday night in the Diane Bennett race. Nick Macklin, Jaret Duff, and Rudy Zaragoza round out the current top five.

Decatur, IL driver, Tristin Quinlan, holds the top spot in the DIRTcar Hornet class, leading by 28 over Brownstown, IL’s Billy Mason. Brady Reed has been the big winner in the class, claiming his sixth feature win of the season last week. Taryn Page and Jeremy Reed round out the top five.

The Micros by Bailey Chassis always seem to have tight battles when it comes to the championship race and this season looks to be the same. Sherman, IL driver, John Barnard, and Riverton, IL’s Aarik Andruskevitch are separated by just four points.

The DIRTcar KidModz will round out the classes on this Saturday’s card. The KidModz will be making their only Macon Speedway appearance of the season, a series that competes at tracks all over the state for drivers between the ages of 8-16.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 4:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps are at 6:00, and racing is at 7:00 PM. Grandstand admission is $15, while kids 11 and under are free.

Taylor Doubles Up Bennett Memorial

By BZ

(Macon, IL) Guy Taylor is at it again and again. Sounds like a broken record. But its true. Taylor took the checkered flag in two of the six features ran during the special 4th Annual Diane Bennett Memorial–a night dedicated to all drivers racing in the features with bonus money handed out to all racers–some $12,000 in cash and prizes.

Taylor won his fifth-straight and ninth Pro Modified feature to begin the night. The race was won from the pole position after he also took the checkered flag in the heat race. Taylor led all 15 laps. During the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, Taylor was faced with a more challenging scenario as Highland’s Mike Harrison was at Macon to race and was flying around the high banks with no troubles at all. Taylor entered the evening tied for first place in the point standings with Rodney Standerfer. Midway through the race, Standerfer was running second & third behind and in front of David Shain, with Taylor right behind running a top five place. He was bumped and nudged by Alan Crowder which led to a stop at the bottom of the fourth turn. Usually those bumps don’t cause much problems. This wasn’t one of those times. Taylor’s 4T ended up with a flat left rear tire and was sent to the infield. Standerfer would continue on and claim the point standings lead by the race’s finish.

Harrison took all 20 laps and netted the special $1,000 first place check. Taylor’s next success would come in the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model race while racing in the 10CE car, a racecar normally driven by Curtis Eller. Early success led to his front row starting spot along with Braden Johnson–who has won the last two feature races and three of the last four main events. Taylor’s success was on the top where he moved past Timmy Dick for the lead on lap 18 and then held on the next 22 laps of the special 40-lap feature which was for $2,050-to-win.

This would make the second time that Guy Taylor has won two features on the same night in different divisions: July 9th in the BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds and the Pro Modifieds.

Luckily, Bobby Beiler didn’t have to contend with Guy Taylor in the 51 Bistro Street Stocks class. Beiler had enough on his plate with Dave Crawley, Jr., Terry Reed and Jeremy Nichols racing for the special $675-to-win main event. Nichols looked unbeatable but as the laps were adding up, Beiler closed the gap and then lapped traffic came into play. Coming out of the second turn on the white flag lap, Nichols, Beiler and the lapped car all got tangled and then mangled. With Nichols in the middle of the beating, his car wouldn’t be able to continue and Beiler would assume the lead for the final lap and the checkered flag. Beiler and Nichols are the only winners in the Street Stock class on the Diane Bennett Memorial night with Nichols taking the wins in 2019 & 2021 while Beiler has won in 2020 & 2022.

An added bonus to the auto racing was the PureMax HART Micro Sprint Series Presented by EMi. 24 non-winged Micro Sprints took to the 1/5th mile track for a 20-lap battle. As Hayden Harvey and Kyle Barker were back and forth for the lead with both high and low grooves being run cleanly, a Micro flipped and landed on Harvey’s car which knocked him out of the feature. Barker was positioned as the leader and on the restart with Daryn Stark, Barker lost the lead to Stark and took off for the final six laps. Stark won for the second straight week after winning in the POWRi Micro Sprint Series at Macon Speedway a week ago.

The finale of the evening was the $695 Hornet feature race that was a tribute to long-time supporter of the Diane Bennett Memorial and fallen racer Joe Reed. The race was started and ended abruptly by Billy Mason, who was racing in Joe Reed’s car. A broken rod led to Mason rolling it in the third turn on the opening lap. As he was brought into the infield and the race restarted, Allan Harris and Brady Reed took off. Reed was back for the first time since the birth of his son and used the high side of the track to pass and go for the win. While Brady Reed was enjoying the bonus payday, last place finishing racer Bridget Fulton took home $250 extra money–$200 from Rich, Terry & Scott Webb–son, daughter-in-law and grandson of Macon Speedway pioneer Wayne Webb, and also $50 from Ryan Murray, a long time Macon Speedway track official.

The night was full of smiles and happiness in honor of Diane Bennett, the long time hand scorer of Macon Speedway for nearly 40 years. The Bennett family once again went above and beyond to provide for racecar drivers and teams through the donations. Many events get built on winning and finishing first but this event gets put together on bonus money for all who race and finish.

Next week, Macon Speedway brings the return of the CEFCU Kids Club and the Spectator Drags along with a full program of stock car racing with the Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models, BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds, 51 Bistro Street Stocks, Pro Modifieds, Micro Sprints Presented by Bailey Chassis and the Hornets.

Over $12k Raised For 4th Annual Macon Speedway Diane Bennett Memorial

(Macon, IL) Over $12,000 in additional bonus money is on the line this coming Saturday, August 6 at Macon Speedway’s 4th Annual Diane Bennett Memorial. The on-track action will honor the late Diane Bennett, a longtime scorer at the speedway. Every single position in all six divisions will receive bonus money, thanks to many great racing supporters.

For those who love to race as well as those who love to watch it, Saturday night will be a great night to come out to the track.  Six divisions are on the ticket, racing in honor of Diane Bennett, a scoring official at the track for over 30 years.  Bennett passed away in 2015 and family stepped forward to put the event together for her memory.  Diane’s daughter, Kellie, has put together an amazing list of donors/sponsors that have stepped forward to sponsor feature positions, creating impressive payouts for the night.

While money is still coming in, over $12,000 has been added to the winnings for this Saturday’s event. The Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Model 40-lap feature will pay at least $2,050 to win with nearly $4,000 in extra cash spread throughout the field. The BillingsleyRewards.com Modified feature will pay at least $1,000 to win with $1,760 in bonus money throughout the field.

Additional bonus money for the other divisions adds up to the following: DIRTcar Pro Mods ($1,305), 51 Bistro Street Stocks ($665), Hornets ($1,190), and HART Non-Wing Micros ($565). In addition to money added to the payouts, there are several special bonuses such as fast qualifier, hard charger, etc.

Point leaders coming into the event are Colby Eller of Taylorville, IL (Decatur Building Trades Pro Late Models), Rodney Standerfer of Summerfield, IL and Guy Taylor from Springfield, IL (tie) (BillingsleyRewards.com Modifieds), Guy Taylor (DIRTcar Pro Mods), Terry Reed from Cerro Gordo, IL (51 Bistro Street Stocks), and Tristin Quinlan of Decatur, IL (Hornets).

Pit gates will open Saturday at 4:00, grandstands at 5:00, hotlaps start at 6:00, and racing will take the green at 7:00.  Grandstand admission is $15, while kids 11 and under are free.
