Zach Daum takes POWRi Midget championship lead into Lincoln, Macon, Angell Park

CaptureMAVTV_ScriptTagline_fPowri2013Zach Daum has surged into the championship lead in the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series, overtaking Andrew Felker with an impressive midseason run that includes two victories and three second place finishes in the past nine races heading into events Friday (Aug. 16) at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway, Saturday’s Dana Godfrey Memorial at Macon (Ill.) Speedway and Sunday’s Miller Lite Cornfest at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis.

Daum leads Felker, 2,420-2,320. He trailed Felker by 360 points prior to POWRi’s June 28 event at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway. The 22-year-old from Pocahontas, Ill., won at Bloomington and Felker was fourth. The 20-year-old from Carl Junction, Mo., followed with four straight top-eight finishes to lead by 340 points, but Daum has out-scored the 2012 POWRi National Midget champion by 440 points in the past four races.

Daum has driven his Toyota-powered Eagle to a victory, two seconds and a ninth in the last four races. Felker has qualified for the feature in the same four, but mechanical problems have prevented him from starting in three. He was second to Daum at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo., on July 27 in the fourth.

Tyler Thomas of Collinsville, Okla., has climbed back into third with 1,805 points by finishing second, fifth and third in the last three features. Jake Blackhurst of Mapleton, Ill., has five top-eights in the past six features and is fourth with 1,785 points and Austin Brown of Millstadt, Ill., has a victory included in five top-eights in the past six races to hold fifth in the points with 1,645.

Terry Babb of Decatur, Ill., has moved into ninth in the points with 980 with a victory, fourth- and sixth-place finishes in his last three POWRi events.

The events at Lincoln, Macon and Angell Park will be co-sanctioned by Stark Automotive Group/Mid-State Equipment Badger Midget Series. Sunday’s event at Angell Park will also be sanctioned by the Honda USAC National Dirt Midget championship, bringing together three of the nation’s most competitive midget series.

POWRi’s Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series brings its narrowing championship battle between Cale Thomas of Fairland, Ind., and Nathan Benson of Concordia, Mo., to Lincoln and Macon.

MOWA Sprint Week Kicks Off

HIGHLAND, Ill. (July 23, 2013) – Midwest Open Wheel Amowa-sprint-weekssociation’s (MOWA) Illinois Sprint Week returns for the third consecutive year, Wednesday, as it kicks off at Highland Speedway, Highland, Ill., and ends at Macon Speedway, Macon, Ill., Saturday.
Besides Danny Smith who is expected to return to defend his championship, the week looks to be dotted with stars who plan to either run the entire series or part of it as it kicks off Wednesday.
Multi-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion and former USAC champion Tony Stewart will be racing the week’s final stop at Macon Speedway. Stewart will have a busy week in the Midwest, and plans take time to make his first appearance with the MOWA series.
Bryan Clauson will be racing with a wing for just the second time in his career. Clauson is a multiple time USAC champion and an Indy 500 veteran. He will be running the Pollock Racing 21x machine during the, Friday, Jacksonville Speedway stop.
Greg Wilson, who ran the Fox #53 at Tri-State Speedway earlier this season, will be making appearances on the first two nights of Sprint Week in the same car. The Fox #53 is well known in non-wing ranks, but threw the wing on for one of the first times in team history with Wilson behind the wheel in June. Wilson drove the car to a third place finish that night in Haubstadt, Ind.
For the second straight year, Highland Speedway opens the festivities as part of the Madison County Fair. With two-time, and defending, Illinois Sprint Week champion Danny Smith expected to be in attendance. Also, current MOWA point leader A.J. Bruns will be on hand along with the rest of the MOWA regulars. Smith kicked off the 2012 Sprint Week with a win in the first appearance at the track for the series last season.
Thursday marks the third visit for the MOWA series to Tri-City Speedway, Pontoon Beach, Ill. It is the second year Tri-City Speedway has been part of Illinois Sprint Week. The track was not part of Sprint Week in 2012, but was part of the event in 2011. Danny Smith won in that appearance, helping to secure his first Sprint Week title. Jerrod Hull won the last MOWA series race at the fast 3/8th’s mile in October of last year.
Known as MOWA’s home track, Jacksonville Speedway is marking it’s third straight year as part of Sprint Week, as it hosts the Herb Barlow Memorial on night number three of Sprint Week 2013, Friday. Brian Brown won last year’s stop at the 1/4 mile during Sprint Week. Smith and Jimmy Hurley have already won feature events at Jacksonville Speedway with MOWA in 2013.
The only other track to be a part of Sprint Week for the third straight year is Macon Speedway, which ends the four night swing of races for the second straight season. Last season’s event was won by Danny Smith and went green to checkered after a first lap caution forced an original restart on the 1/5 mile speedway. Hull won the 2011 event at Macon Speedway.

MOWA Sprint Series, NASCAR Star Tony Stewart & Dynagraphics/Fast Impressions at Macon Speedway Saturday, July 27

(Macon, IL)  Macon Speedway and Dynagraphics/Fast Impressions, along with Donnelly Automotive, welcome the Midwest Open Wheel Association Sprint Car Series this Saturday night, July 27 as a part of the MOWA Sprint Week that runs from Wednesday, July 24 through Saturday, July 27. The best winged sprint car drivers in the Midwest will try to tame the Macon bullring as winged sprints return to the legendary track including NASCAR Champion and co-owner of Macon Speedway, Tony Stewart. Stewart will be racing his winged sprint car for the first time at Macon that night.

Tony Stewart’s love is racing winged sprint cars. So it’s not hard to understand why he’s making a trip to his track to jump in during MOWA Sprint Week. Any type of open-wheeled race, he’s there. It will be a night of excitement when he goes up against the top Midwest drivers in the series.

Not only is the Sprint Week title on the line, but the series overall points battle at the top with A.J. Bruns leading the series as of July 20, with Jerrod Hull and Paul Nienhiser rounding out the top three. The series includes top sprint drivers such as Jim Moughan, Ben Wagoner, Jimmy Hurley, and Robbie Standridge. Any one of them could come out on top during this week’s action in determining who is going to be crowned the inaugural MOWA  Series Champion.

MOWA co-founder Joey Moughan shares in that excitement, “When we started this series, we wanted to be able to race at the premier tracks within two hours of our home base in Springfield, Illinois and there’s no doubt that Macon is at the top of that list. The action on the track should be incredible, especially with the added drama of it being at the end of our Sprint Week.  I know that I’m coming there planning to win it.  The problem is that there are twenty or more other guys who want it just as bad.  It should be an awesome night.”

But the excitement doesn’t end with sprint cars. Macon Speedway has put together a Saturday Night  full of racing with the Billingsley Towing Modifieds, Street Stocks, Outlaw Hornets, Stock Hornets and 600cc Mini Sprints. Each division is heating up as the season is going into the last stretch on who will come out as the track champion.

Pit Gates open at 3 pm; grandstands at 5 pm; racing begins at 7 pm.  General admission tickets for adults are only $18 and children 11 & under are admitted free with a paying adult.

Macon Speedway is located 9 miles south of Decatur, IL on US 51 then 1/2 mile west on Andrews Street, then South on Wiles.
